Does Location of Website server matter for marketing

It may sound not a very appropriate question here but I will still ask. Does the geographical location of the host play much importance? For example, if I am from the UK, and will use hosting from the US, how will it be reflected on my site? Please tell me the main shortcomings of such an arrangement.
 
Yes, it matters a lot.

Basically the nearer the visitor is to the server, the higher your search engine rankings.

So if you are in UK, better to get a server from UK. Or you can go for a cloud hosting which basically serves your website from a distributed server that is nearest to your visitors location.
