TOPIC: - The utility of “Value Chain Analysis” for gaining insights into Competitive Advantage.
Cover Page (including Student Details, Subject Name and Tutorial Time)
Table of Contents
Executive Summary (approx 150 words)
Introduction (approx 200 words)
• You need to explain in your own words what your assignment is going to cover and what you are planning to talk about in your assignment. For example: In this assignment I will ……….
Scholarly Overview of Value Chain Analysis (approx 600 words)
• In order to get a pass grade for this assignment you will need to research and read a range of scholarly articles (from the Library) on Value-Chain Analysis. The Library will help you to use such electronic products such as EBSCO Host. There are a range of articles available from journals such as Strategic Management and the Harvard Business Review.
o You need to be able to demonstrate that you have read and understood a minimum of 6 articles. You cannot understand Value Chain without this level of research. You cannot gain a scholarly understanding if you do not read quality materials
o General Google websites, Wikipedia, QuickMBA. Com, NETMBA. Com, Marketingteacher.com or Tutor2u.net and other generic websites are not considered “scholarly” and will NOT be accepted as evidence of research.
• You need to provide a summary/overview of how the authors in the articles you have read define “value-chain”. Almost certainly every author will interpret it differently or have a different perspective. It is not enough to simply take quotes from the articles, you must demonstrate an understanding. For example you might say something like… Ian Johnson in his article on xxx defines value chain as…..
• You should then clearly define – what you mean when you mention “value-chain”? What does it mean to you? Define it in your own words. Do not simply use their language as it is obvious that these are not your words and that you have not understood what the article is saying. It might be a combination of the above authors or your own interpretation. Marks will be given for individual opinions. Remember your opinion cannot be wrong as long as you can explain it.
Three Contemporary Examples of Value Chain Analysis (approx 600 words)
• This section allows you to demonstrate that you can apply some of the definitions that you have listed above. You need to find three articles (they might be from the ones you have used above or could be new ones) that demonstrate how “Value-Chain is applied in Real Examples”.
o These articles should not (you should have done that above) be definitional but should be examples of where value-chain is actually used for analysis.
• You should:
o Summarise the central themes of each of these examples, you should ensure that these are in your own words
o Discuss how these examples have helped your understanding of what an analysis of value chain is
You MUST provide a “copy” of the abstract of the article with full bibliographical details.
Write a Critique of “Value Chain Analysis” (approx 800 words)
• Drawing on the sections above, discuss how useful you think value chain analysis is as a tool of competitive analysis
• This needs to be YOUR INDIVIDUAL opinion and demonstrate that you understand what some authors/analysts have said about value chain as a tool for competitive analysis and what you think about it
• Your own views cannot be wrong as long as they are clear and well written
Conclusion (200 words)
In this section you should summarise what you have said above and some of the key points. Don’t simply be repetitive but reiterate the main points you want to get across. The idea of a conclusion is to ensure that you have done what you said you would do in the introduction and leave a positive message.
Reference List
• Please note your reference list is not a list of all you have read but that material that you have references/cited and/or explicitly used in your assignment
• You will LOSE 5 marks if your referencing style is NOT correct
Style
• You will lose marks for poor grammar, spelling, proof-reading. You need to include all of the comments on the web and in your Competitive Watch Assignment. You are expected to have demonstrated improvement.
• You should use a 12point font and 1.5 line spacing. Assignments not using this standard will NOT be marked
• You must put your name and page number on each page.
• Use your own words/language – don’t try to use large, complex words that you don’t understand and can’t use in a sentence
