Do engineers really make good managers?

yes it helps.Management is needed in doing everything effectively.today mgt+eng is the safest career option and also when you have that knowledge of mgt you don't feel left out in those management board meeting of an organization.

Dear Friends,
This is indeed a great and real topic. There is always a question on Engineers (with Engg Degree) succeeding in Mangegement (MBA). I too had this question. After seeing various posts/replies in MP, it gives me immense satisfaction that MP is a right place as lot of them expressed same opinion this shows MP members are practical.
Yes, professionals can certianly become good managers and succeed. Let us not limit to engineers. Even MBBS can become good mgrs. This is greatness of MBA/Mgmt subject. It fits all fields. It looks realistic that Engineers can become good managers as they are practical and goal oriented. They believe in facts and data. Mgmt knowledge help a engineer to become more finsihed, refined, amicable and increase productivity and take their company into to profits by managing process, people and resources.

Thanks for allowing me to write my opinion. Hope I have not hurt anyone. If so a BIG SORRY.

Regards,
Nandan

its not necessary..during graduation we just take experience of college in which we study.it doesn't matter whether someone goes for 4 yr engineering course or some other course, what matters is the experience which one collected during the course of time. And these things decide his managerial skills.

No engineers never become managers bcoz of their immature levels on the managerial skills they can be dominated in the technical side but they cant handle the situations which can be effectively done by a manager

The solid and rigorous mathematical background actually helps and yes engineers make great managers. In Morocco more than 80% of the government with 5 keys ministers are on the hands of engineers (Of course I am talking about really high, world class engineering level). I think th

I DONOT THINK THEY MAKE GOOD MANAGERS AS THEY CULD HAVE MANAGED THEMELVES AND GOT A JOB AFTER COMPLETING GRADUATION BUT THEY CHOOSE MBA WHICH SHOWS THEIR INCAPABILITY IN MAKING DECISIONS

Yes, the actually make good managers....an observation by me is most of the best performing mba students are engineers...

Good managers!

A good manager need to necessary to be a BE or B-com or even an MBA.

A good manager is one who can lead a team successfully in their assignments. A good manager needs to be proactive rather reactive and needs to make enough connect with his fellow employees to keep up the good spirit which can ideally help the team.

A good manager having good man managing skills and intra personnel skills would be very successful in their endeavors!

i agree with you...management is not about education is about tthe way you are able to think and i think that matters more than your educational background......

Nop, i don't think so.. what i have learnt so far, engineers are the developers and the mbas are managers..and one thing that cannot be neglected that management is an art and some are god gifted, they have it in them irrespective of what have they done, it is not that an mba graduate will be the best manager because he has learnt many theories...examples are in abundance there were very few leaders who were engineers or mba's. Most of them had the quality ingrained in them.. Managers are the leaders
Any one can be a good manager, he just have to be adaptive...

It all depends on the field- they make great project managers, they keep to rigid deadlines and pay meticulous attention to detail. At least that's how my husband and his colleagues who are all engineers are. But while I think they may manage projects well, I am not so sure about people. The engineers I know prefer working on projects rather than managing people.
