The production of tooth paste started in India during later decades of the British regime, when a few forign owned units such as Colgatye Palmolive, Geoffrey Manner Limited and Hindustan Lever Limited began manufacturing. Even today, tooth paste branded ‘Forhans’, ‘Cibaca’, ‘Promise’, etc., are being produced by multinational companies. In addition to the organized sector, a good number of units are functioning in the small-scale sector.

Infact the production of tooth paste is reserved exclusively for the development in small scale sector for quite a few years. However, no authentic information is available regarding the contribution of this sector. On the basis of investigations made with few wholesellers and retailers of tooth paste, it is observed that good number of ayurvedic and medicated brands of toothpaste such as ‘Vicco Vajradanti’, ‘Double-mint’, ‘IPCO’, ‘Dentoback’, ‘College’, etc., are also available and are being manufactured in small-scale sector. Investigations revealed thatthis sector shared about 10% of the total production upto 1980-81 and is sharing 20% of total production from 1981-82 onwards.
