CP Goenka International School (Formerly known as Billabong International School), Mumbai joins hand with Habitat for Humanity to support the cause sanitation in India
400 students raise 1.62 lakhs to build ten units in Mumbai
Mumbai, 17th February 2015: Habitat for Humanity, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the cause of housing and sanitation, is conducting a "Rupee for Change" campaign across schools in India with the objective of creating awareness about poverty housing and poor sanitation among students.
CP Goenka International School, Juhu, had earlier conducted a workshop that involved 2-D art contest on themes of homes and sanitation. Children from the school participated enthusiastically and submitted paintings that highlighted their perspectives on the issue of housing and sanitation in India. Parents were also encouraged to contribute to help build homes and sanitation units through this activity. The school collected one lakh sixty two thousand rupees to support ten sanitation units. A cheque was handed over to Habitat for Humanity on behalf of the school by honourable Ms. Poonam Mahajan, Member of Parliament from Mumbai, who was the chief guest for the event.
Ms. Poonam Mahajan commended the efforts put in by the students of the school and discussed the power of a drop accumulating to make a large ocean. She said that is small effort by the children will go a long way in changes the lives of the people who will benefit from the sanitation units.
Habitat for Humanity is assisting the school authorities in promoting these activities. Mr Rajan Samuel, Managing Director - Habitat for Humanity India mentioned, "We have recently conducted a workshop on poverty housing and sanitation in the school along with a 2-D art competition. The 2D art competition is an initiative where the students and parents come together to identify innovative ideas to address poverty housing. Students and their parents are encouraged to contribute in building sanitation units (toilets) for the underprivileged families. We firmly believe that a holistic approach is paramount in combating these challenges.
The 2D art competition comprises a simple craft in which students present their perspective to build 2D homes or sanitation units using natural elements such as pebbles, hay, twigs, clay etc. The workshop is held in many schools in which all students of the school are taken through a small video showcasing Habitat’s work in India and highlighting the need for funds to improve state of sanitation and homelessness in India. An appeal is made to parents and their friends / families to contribute Rs. 365 (Re.1/- per day) or more.
Rupee for Change is a fund raising campaign to reach out to 1 lakh families by 2020. The campaign revolves around the power of One Rupee which can benefit children who do not have the same privilege of homes and sanitation units which many of us have.
