Corporate social responsibility's a new chapter in B-school texts
KOLKATA: With the concept of triple bottomline gaining ground among Indian companies, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are incorporating specialised courses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) as part of their academic offering.
While IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has introduced it as part of the executive MBA programme, IIM Lucknow (IIM-L) is soon going to start a short-term course on CSR for middle-level professionals.
The academia feels such specialised management programmes will now assume importance since corporates are finding close relation between sustainability of business and its contribution to society.
The concept of triple bottomline means taking into account environmental and social performance in addition to financial performance. “In order to gain competitive edge, firms need to adopt socially responsible strategies and deepen relationships with stakeholders. Hence, we decided to start a specialised programme on CSR,” said Sushil Kumar, co-ordinator of the CSR programme at IIM-L.
IIM-L’s programme is targeted at middle and senior level managers who are connected in managing their organisations on a sustainable basis. The programme will delve into issues such as better reporting of CSR activities, public-private-partnerships, indexing of business and the environmental and economic dimensions of CSR.
“This programme will address the need to incorporate CSR as a business strategy. A similar module will be incorporated as an elective in our regular MBA programme from the next academic session. We are also evaluating the option of starting a comprehensive regular programme on CSR,” added Mr Kumar.
IIM-A, on the other hand, has incorporated two CSR-related courses on corporate ethics and corporate governance as part of its one year executive MBA programme (PGPX). These courses are taught as part of the module on ‘preparing for top management’.
“These are CSR-related issues which a top management professional needs to know for sustaining their organisation. Hence, we have incorporated them as compulsory part of the programme,” said G Raghuram, chairperson (PGPX), IIM-A.
IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) has introduced concepts like social development projects as part of its MBA curriculum. “This module inculcates the habit of association with society and sensitise the students on developing an orientation on the various CSR issues,” said a senior faculty member at IIM-K.
