MARK CROWELL
INNOVATION AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT
(FORMER) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Mark Crowell is an internationally-known practitioner and consultant in areas related to university
innovation and business development, proof-of-concept and translational research initiatives, university-
industry (and foundation) research partnerships, and innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem
development strategies. Mark currently consults for and advises such organizations as the World Bank,
BIO, PhRMA, the Arkansas Research Alliance, Eva Klein & Associates, Maximus, Research Triangle
Institute, and a number of university clients.
From 2010-2014, Mark was the founding Executive Director of UVa Innovation at the University of
Virginia (and Associate Vice President for Research). In one of the nation’s first pan-university “chief
innovation officer” roles, Mark led the re-engineering and integration of the university’s technology
transfer, business development, industry and foundation research, and innovation policy and advisory
services; in addition, he worked to establish collaborative mechanisms between UVa Innovation and
entrepreneurship education, innovation challenge, Darden iLab, Open Grounds, and related initiatives
across the university. Key accomplishments within UVa during Mark’s tenure included numerous new
company launches, accelerated time frames for “lab to market” for promising UVa discoveries, enhanced
numbers of licenses and partnerships with industry and foundations, and a national “best-in-class”
process for managing translational research and proof-of –commercial-readiness projects. In May 2014,

Award for its work in advancing innovation and intellectual property.
Mark advises key leaders and policy development groups, including the NIH, US Congress, AAMC
Council of Deans, and many others. He testified twice in Congress about the critical need for more
resources to address the “translational gap” between basic discovery and market readiness, leading to
the introduction of a key piece of legislation, the “Transfer Act of 2013”, in which his testimony was cited
as a catalyst for newly proposed initiatives. As a result of his effectiveness in advocating for support for
best practices in university innovation management, Mark was invited by the White House to the
presidential signing ceremony for the America Invents Act.
While leading UVa Innovation, Mark was – and remains – extremely active and engaged in national and
international advisory and advocacy work related to university innovation and business development. He
chairs BIO’s Technology Transfer Committee and has chaired the Translational Research Forum at the
last four BIO International Conventions. His impact and visibility leads to frequent invitations to speak

and share best practices in settings around the US, including a fall 2013 invitation from the Office of US
Senator Max Baucus to speak at the Montana J obs Summit 2013 (featuring speakers like Elon Musk,
Sheryl Sandberg, and other prominent CEOs of Fortune 500 and high growth, high success startups).
Mark’s most recent international consulting work includes innovation capacity building initiatives in
Eastern Europe on behalf of the World Bank, innovation policy and best practices advisory projects in
South America on behalf of BIO, and keynote addresses at international conferences and symposia in
such places at Singapore, China, Thailand, J apan, and Brazil.
Before going to UVa in 2010, Mark served as Vice President for Business Development at the Scripps
Research Institute in La J olla, CA, and J upiter, FL, following a long career in Research Triangle Park,
North Carolina, where he led the innovation, technology transfer, and industry research enterprises for
Duke (1987-1992), North Carolina State University (1992-2000), and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill (2000-2008). During the past 25 years, the technology transfer programs Mark has directed
have helped to launch more than 135 start-up companies, as well as numerous products and services.
He also played a major role in the development of research campuses in the Research Triangle region
and co-founded a university-related venture capital fund.
Crowell was the 2005 President of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM). In 2013,
