IIM Kozhikode and Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) Celebrate Integrity and Sincerity by commemorating death anniversary of Manjunath Shanmugam
19th November 2009
Students at IIM Kozhikode in association with Manjunath Shanmugam Trust organised a candle light vigil to commemorate the death of Manjunath Shanmugam, an IIM Lucknow alumnus. Manjunath Shanmugam is a name that no MBA graduate from IIM Lucknow 2001-03 batch is likely to forget. However the relevance of this name and the individual to which it belongs to has to be understood by students all over the country.
An IIM Lucknow (2003 batch) alumnus, Manjunath was a popular student, noted for his passion for music, sincerity and integrity. An Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) employee, he was working to curb malpractices in his territory and was murdered on 19th November 2005 by a petrol pump owner and his accomplices.
Manjunath Shanmugam Trust
The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust was formed on 23rd February 2006, Manjunath’s 28th birth anniversary, by members of international IIM alumni network. MST’s immediate objective was to ensure quick justice in Manjunath Murder case. The broader vision of the trust is to build on the network, skills and resources of the professional corporate community, to help improve governance in Indian public life. The Trust has also instituted Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award to honour and encourage persons or institutions who are working to uphold the values of truth and honesty in Indian corporate, government or public life.
CandleLight March
Students of IIM Kozhikode gathered in huge numbers to attend the vigil in remembrance of the brave individual who gave his life to counter corruption and uphold integrity. The students took an oath of honesty, integrity and commitment to ethical behaviour as responsible citizens of India. Director of IIM Kozhikode, Dr. Debashis Chatterjee, who was then professor at IIM Lucknow and taught Manjunath, shared some of his memories of Manjunath. The address was followed by a minutes’ silence in commemoration of Manjunath.
The vigil is a unique opportunity for the entire student community of India to stir nationwide consciousness and raise their voice against rampant corruption. There has been much discourse on corruption which is still a deep-rooted reality in India. The march is an attempt to find a solution to this problem by instilling a spirit of sincerity and integrity in students. The importance of these values in the current business scenario is being emphasised. The idea is to create an ethical consciousness in students that will deter them from business malpractices. Manjunath Shanmugam trust has taken the initiative and several leading educational institutions of this country including IIM Kozhikode have responded in kind.
