First of all, I think privatisation by whom is the question. Who takes over will decide how it turns out. If we have someone who is bent on profits take up the rein, it will spill disaster, right now Indian railways are the cheapest mode of transport and privatisation will definitely change that add to that the point that lot of people are dependent on that for daily commuting to transport, it is a bees hive to touch for privatisation.

Although privatization might not be the popular option for a company that is the pride of the public sector, it is the best option India has to recover the waning confidence in its foreign investors and propel foreign capital back into the country. Even though earlier attempts to privatize Indian Railways (during its low points) were unsuccessful, the current company is a rejuvenated and magnetic force destined to attract capital.

For an enterprise that is as proficiently managed as Indian Railways has been - a unique trait among SEOs - partial privatization or "disinvestment" is a viable option. Disinvestment allows the government to sell shares to private ownership while still retaining managerial direction of the company. Keeping the working model that is set in place and simultaneously allowing for capital to flow in will allow for greater progress by the company to innovate and vastly improve its services. The highly successful system will be maintained while outside capital will pour in.
