Business Intelligence Exchange

Business Intelligence Exchange
Analyze and Monitor SmartBPM
®
in a Data Warehouse
Challenges
fHow can BPMS data be combined with
other information for BI, BAM, and
analytics?
fHow can scheduled ETL be done easily
without hurting BPM performance?
fWhat happens to BI and analytics when
the BPM process is changed?
Features
fExtract work consistently from
multiple implementations
fSpecify work details and indexes in a
pick list
fSelect and extract all BPM data: Work
details, assignments, and process
history
fControl timing and mechanics for
each extract from each application or
system
Benefits
fBPM visibility across the enterprise
fEasier and better controlled extracts
make ETL projects faster
fNo need to expose or refactor work for
reporting, BI, and DW initiatives means
simpler projects and easier changes
fLow performance impact; no need for
custom coding and batch changes
Business Intelligence Exchange (BIX), one of Pegasystems’ Federated Business
Frameworks, extracts SmartBPM
®
case data and other information from
multiple systems for advanced Business Intelligence and Analytics.
Organizations using SmartBPM to handle complex cases with human and
system interactions need to report on assignments and case data, monitor
business activity, and manage workloads. Standard SmartBPM tools and reports
and custom reports created with the report wizard can handle many monitoring
needs.
In a federated deployment, an organization often wants to combine data from
SmartBPM systems, legacy applications, Web portals, and other sources to
provide a more complete picture of the business, using Data Warehousing for
decision support and advanced analytics.
To support flexible definition and evolution, SmartBPM stores all case data
(details from web forms, calculations such as risk and eligibility, and case
history) in a compressed XML object format. BIX extracts this information into
formats suitable for importing into a consolidated data warehouse or other
analytics environment.

Business Intelligence Exchange Architecture
BIX allows a data analyst to select the specific data needed
from one or more SmartBPM
®
systems, and to automate the
extraction of this data for use in a Data Warehouse or other
external analytics environment.
BIX provides the following capabilities:
fExtract Definition – Use standard SmartBPM forms on
the source systems to define data to be extracted, extract
format, and data filtering
fTree navigation and selection – Select data from your
5.5 system using the new tree tool, and select properties,
pages, or all work data easily
fForm-based extraction – Run an extract manually using
the 5.5 form to test data extraction and monitor changes
to extract selection.
fScript-based extraction – Extract data using an Ant script,
either referring to the extract form or using an XML file to
define extraction data, format, and filtering
Data selection uses an easy to manage form on the source
SmartBPM system, permitting selection of multiple different
properties from work objects and other data elements.
Output format is selected on the same form, and multiple
forms can be defined for each system to support data
extracts to different targets or on different schedules. On
PRPC 5.5, the extract form also supports test extraction of
data to ensure the desired data elements are selected.
Once data extraction forms are defined, an external tool,
such as a Data Warehouse ETL, can perform extraction
when needed using a script on the BIX system. Because
the extraction is performed directly against the SmartBPM
database from the BIX system, there is minimal performance
impact on SmartBPM applications. SmartBPM does not need
to be active, and the extract does not use the SmartBPM
clipboard or parsing services.
By integrating SmartBPM data with information from other
systems of record, organizations can create a broad view of
overall business.
Federated Business Frameworks (FBFs)
Pegasystems’ FBFs use SmartBPM, Pega’s industry-leading
BPMS, to manage and connect BPM initiatives across the
enterprise. FBFs offer a central view of BPM work, data,
performance, and re-usable components for multiple
projects, building bridges of shared work and process across
different lines of business, lowering operational costs, and
dramatically improving customer experience.
Computers can and should do more, and BIX and the FBFs
help to ensure high performance applications with reduced
total cost of ownership.
Prerequisites
Business Information Exchange is an optional capability
for SmartBPM 5.5 or higher, and can extract data from
SmartBPM 5.1 or higher.
