The BSc Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) course offered by Loughborough University’s Department of Computer science is a degree programme designed in partnership with leading employers to prepare students for a successful career in IT.
Today employers are increasingly looking for graduates with more than just computing skills. This three year full time course, rather than focusing purely on technical areas, covers the best mix of skills and knowledge for students who want exciting and challenging management or senior professional careers in designing, developing and implementing technology solutions for businesses. It offers a high level of knowledge and practical skills to students in both IT and management, thus, preparing them for a challenging and rewarding career. The programme gives an unrivalled platform on which to build a career in the knowledge economy.
The ITMB course has been specifically designed to offer an insight into the real world of IT and allows a student to:
• Learn the people and project management skills required to be a successful IT professional in any sector
• Evaluate and understand technology and its role within business
• Gain practical experience working on authentic business challenges
• Establish an unrivalled platform for launching your career
The programme is the only honours degree endorsed by e-Skills UK - the organization which officially represents the IT industry to government in the UK. It is supported by a partnership of leading industry employers including BA, the BBC, BT, The Cabinet Office, Cisco, Deloitte, Ford, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, ITV, LogicaCMG, The Met Office, Morgan Stanley, Norwich Union, Royal Bank of Scotland, Sainsbury’s, Symantec and Unilever. The ITMB degree is only available from a carefully vetted and selected group of 13 UK universities accredited to deliver it. With 'guru' talks by industry professionals on a regular basis, and national gatherings of companies and ITMB students for workshops and competitions the ITMB degree really is in a league of its own.
The course is also available as a 4-year work placement (sandwich) programme wherein students will have the opportunity to get paid industrial or professional work experience incorporated between periods of academic study at the University. With this, the students are awarded the additional Diploma in Professional Studies for successful completion of the course along with their BSc degree qualification.
During their final year of study ITMB students undertake a research project with an employer of their choice. The research in question could for example involve the development of a website or other system, or perhaps explore an aspect of the business in question, for example how they undertake project management, e-marketing or a wide variety of other potential areas of mutual interest. In past years students have developed systems for multi-national businesses including IBM. Students have also worked with overseas organisations, for example the University of Singapore, allowing students to experience the effect of overseas outsourcing first hand. Some students have even gone into partnership with their stakeholders to form new business ventures. In undertaking their project students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned to the real world, and in doing so gain an unrivalled understanding of the problems real businesses face. Many of the students who undertake such projects with businesses will go on to be employed by those businesses, showing the true value of the Loughborough University ITMB degree.
