“BRITISH RULE AND THE EXPLOITASTION OF INDIA”
After the Battle of plassey, the British East India Company had succeeded in establishing its role over the major parts of India and with it began the period of colonial exploitation of the country.
In this period there was massive drain of wealth to this country. Even the transfer of power form the East Indian Company to the British Crown did not materially alter the situation. The colonial exploitation had continued; only its form had changed.
This period of exploitation was divided into three phases:
• The period of the merchant capital – staring form the Battle of Plassey and continuing till the end of eighteenth century.
• The period of industrial capital – starting from the beginning of
nineteenth century and containing till the end of this century.
• The period of finance capital – starting form the late nineteenth century and continuing till the Independence.
When the East Indian Company captures power in 1757, the Indian economy was basically feudal. Anyway, the intervention of British in India capitalist class and with it, whatever limited possibilities of capitalist development existed in the Indian economy was destroyed. In the early period of its rule, the East India Company adopts various methods of Exploitation.
• First of all the East India Company indulged in direct plunder the guide of trade.
• Second, under the East India Company the land revenue was an instrument of plundering the peasants.
• Thirdly, when the officers of the East India Company were unscrupulous and corrupt, they adopted all possible means to make large fortunes.
Then came the introduction of the zamandari system under the permanent settlement in 1973 ensuring fixed annual land revenue of f 34, 00,000. And this system proved to be quite exploitative.
There was serious repercussion of the exploitation of Indian people by the East India Company. Then the economy of the country shattered, many of the prosperous regions were also affected by the exploitation.
