Year One: Course Description for Harmattan Semester of the Enterprise Creation Year
ECM 101 Accounting for Non Accountants I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic principles and procedures
of accounting and accounting statements. Every entrepreneur is expected to understand
the concept of accounting information and accounting record keeping. This is what we
present through this first course in accounting to make the students understand
accounting through an introduction to its principles and concepts.
ECM 103 Sourcing Financial Resources
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic tools, sources and
concepts of financial decision making. It is a foundational course for entrepreneur to
know the fundamental sources of financial resources and the techniques of financial
decision making. The emphasis will be on the micro aspects of finance treated at an
introductory level. It is to make the students understand from the onset of their course
of study, the significance of finance in any business enterprise.
ECM 105 Concept of Entrepreneurship I
This course is expected to introduce the students to the fundamentals of
entrepreneurship and the basics required to imbibe the attitude of an entrepreneur. It
will introduce the unique characteristics of entrepreneurship and the process of
developing entrepreneurial spirit. It will also focus on entrepreneurial theories; elements
of successful entrepreneurship; the process of opportunity identification and product
development; entrepreneurial lifestyle; entrepreneurial goal setting and visioning.
ECM 107 Statistics for Managers I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of statistics as a
relevant tool for all management students. It aims at empowering the students with the
required analytical skills for making inquiries in the social and management sciences. It
will introduce the students to the types, nature and uses of statistics, particularly from
the perspective of business decision making.
ECM 109 Understanding Microeconomics
This course is to introduce the basic concepts of microeconomics to the student with
the aim of presenting a proper perspective to the students on the theories of economics,
particularly from the micro point of view. It is expected that the understanding of the
micro-economic decision making process by the students will sharpen their ability to
operate effectively in the economic system.
ECM 111 Creativity and Innovation I
This course is designed to awake the creative minds of the students and sensitize them
towards realizing the fact that creativity is core to progress and success in life. At the
end of the semester, the students are expected to present an idea that could be further
developed into a product (in form of a good or service) or in form of an improvement
on an existing process of operations in any establishment.
ECM 113 Understanding the Business Structure
This course is designed to make the students understand the concept of business as an
activity and as an enterprise. It is not about the administration or management of
business enterprises, as this is a subject of another course. It is basically to introduce the
students to the theory of the business, and make them realize the basic requirements of
establishing a business, the purpose for doing so, the types of businesses, their
advantages, and disadvantages, the structure of business, and the underlying
assumptions guiding the successful operations of businesses in the global business
system.
ECM 115 Understanding Management
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of management,
the management principles, theories and functions. With this course the students should
become conversant with what management is all about; i.e. What management is? What
managers do? Why managers do what they do?
GNS 101 Use of English I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of
communication in English Language since this is the language of communication to be
used throughout the course of study of the students and perhaps in the course of doing
business within the Nigerian Business Environment. The need to improve the
understanding of the use of the language is basically the focus of attention of this
course.
GNS 103 Computer Appreciation I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic knowledge of computer
which has become an invaluable companion to our daily life. It is impossible today to
imagine any field of knowledge, discipline or profession where the use of computer and
the knowledge of computer are not applicable. As a 21

technology is required to make the students be at home with the use and application of
the computer, hence this early introduction.
ECM 117 Introduction to Product Branding
This course is designed to introduce the students to the concept of branding. The basic
requirements of branding the enterprise, its people and products and the consequent
benefits of doing so. As an introductory course in branding, the preparation for the
subsequent courses would have been made through the laying of the foundation by
teaching the fundamentals of branding.

ECM 102 Accounting for Non Accountants II
This course is designed to complete the introduction of the students to the basic
principles and procedures of accounting and accounting statements. Since every
student of management is expected to understand the concept of accounting
information and accounting record keeping, the presentation in the first semester is
therefore completed with this follow up.
ECM 104 Managing Financial Resources
This course is a follow up to the first semester course in finance, and it is to further the
students’ knowledge of the basic tools and concepts of financial decision making. It is
expected to cover the other aspects of the principles of finance particularly the
financial management principles to complete the introductory course in finance.
ECM 106 Concept of Entrepreneurship II
This course will take the student further in entrepreneurship knowledge through the
consideration of Planning in Entrepreneurship, Business Plan and Feasibility Study in
Entrepreneurship, Legal issues in Entrepreneurship, Financial Challenges of Entrepreneurs,
Comparative Analysis of entrepreneurial practices between developed countries and less
developed countries, Starting and Managing Small Business enterprises and entrepreneurial
development, Efficient and effective management of Small Business, Ethical issues, and
Contemporary issues in Entrepreneurship
ECM 108 Statistics for Managers II
This course is designed to further introduce the students to the basic concepts of
probability in statistics as a relevant tool for all management students. It aims at
empowering the students with the required analytical skills for making inquiries in the
social and management sciences.
ECM 110 Understanding Macroeconomics
This course is to introduce the basic concepts of macroeconomics to the student with
the aim of presenting a proper perspective to the students on the macroeconomic
theories required to understand the economy. It is expected that the understanding of
these theories will enable the students to understand and apply the economic policies
better.
ECM 112 Creativity and Innovation II
This course is designed to increase the students’ knowledge of creativity and
innovation in relation to organization management and success. It is a follow up to the
creativity course in the first semester and is required to further entrench the ideals of
creative and innovative management to the students. At the end of the semester, the
students are expected to create an enterprise that will be used as a vehicle to convey
the students’ creative idea (developed and approved in the first semester) into a
product (in form of a good or service) to the market.
ECM 114 Business Mathematics
This course is to make the students understand the basic business mathematics,
particularly the required knowledge of mathematics that constitute one of the tools
required to acquire the process of studying and operating in the business system. The
course will consider basic arithmetic operations, ratios and proportions, basic algebra,
polynomial, factorization of Algebraic Expressions, discounting and depreciation,
cartesian coordinate system, functions and relations, equations, indices, ogarithms and
set theory
ECM 116 Application of Management Theories
This course will consider; Concepts, levels and features of theory in management, the links
between management theories and management models, Practice or management conduct as
test of good management theory,
Existing difficulties of developing useful management theories in Nigeria and of the developing
countries. The Theories of management and their relevance in business management. Practice
in constructing management theories from the Nigeria Socio- Cultural experiences of managing
(i) extended family issues (ii) of settling group conflict (iii) of securing productivity at work
(iv) Maintaining control over therefore in the environment .
GNS 102 Use of English II
This course is a follow up to Basic English in Harmattan Semester. It is
designed to complement the introduction of the students to the basic concepts
of communication in English Language since this is the language of
communication to be used throughout the course of study of the students. The
need to improve the ability of the students to communicate effectively in
writing is the focus of attention of this course.
GNS 104 Computer Appreciation II
This course is designed as a follow up to Basic Computer Knowledge in the
first semester. It is expected to make the students familiarize themselves with
the computer through application of basic computer packages and relevance of
the basic knowledge of computer to their various fields of study. This is based
on the premise that one cannot imagine any field of knowledge, discipline or
profession where the use of computer and the knowledge of computer is not

ECM 118 Business Ideas and Motivation
This course is expected to generate a crop of business ideas and motivate the
students towards the process of actualising those business ideas. There are
numerous opportunities that needed to be made known to the students in the
diverse areas of business. There are also steps that must be taken to make those
opportunities real. This course should be able to motivate the students to
action.

ECM 201 Business Skills and Cases
This course is expected to present different cases of entrepreneurs for the
students to learn from and in the process rediscover their hidden talents and
skills. The idea is to identify, at least, twelve to twenty successful
entrepreneurs from different business interests and use their cases to impart
knowledge and self-belief into the students.
ECM 203 Preparing Management Accounts
To introduce students to the techniques of Management Accounting, Nature,
Objectives and Scope of Management Accounting, Relationship between
Management and Financial Accounting; Cost Behaviour; Introduction to Cost
Volume Profit Analysis Introduction to Standard Costing and Elementary
Variance Analysis; Budget and Budgetary Control; Discounting Techniques
and Investment Appraisal; Decision making Techniques.
ECM 205 Corporate Entrepreneurship
The focus of this stage of the study of entrepreneurship is to be able to
distinguish entrepreneurship from intrapreneurship or corporate
entrepreneurship. The various characteristics and requirements of corporate
entrepreneurship is to be taught to the students.
ECM 207 Statistical Applications in Business Management
This is an attempt to significantly apply the statistical theories learnt in the
first year to business management and decision making. Each of the statistical
tools will be re-examined to bring out and apply them to the various areas of
business, from production to marketing.
ECM 209 Business/Managerial Economics
Objectives of the firm, Economic Theories and Application in Managerial

determine a specific industry interest where he or she will end up specialising.

This course is designed to introduce the students to the subject matter of the
business environment and its role in the emergence and sustenance of
business enterprises at both local and international settings. It is expected that

ECM 204 Interpreting Financial Accounts
This is a course that is expected to practically prepare the students to understand
and make use of financial accounts for business decisions. Each of the accounting
information will be taken and possible business decisions would be drawn from
them, particularly from a competitor’s perspective
ECM 206 Global Entrepreneurship
This course will focus on entrepreneurship from the global perspective. Attention
will be paid to characteristics and features of global entrepreneurs and the
requirements for becoming one
ECM 208 Business Plan Preparation
The requirements and processes of preparing a business plan is the focus of
this course. The content includes; the feasibility study process, know
yourself, identify the idea, select the idea, research the idea, and come out
with a reasonable prospect of starting the business by outlining the business
plan, deciding the strategy, managing the resources, planning the market,
and summarize the business plan.

This course is to introduce the students to the rudiments of organizing

ECM 302 Venture Capital and New Ventures
The concepts of venture capital and new venture creation are the
focus of this course. It is expected to introduce the students to venture
capital and how this concept can assist in the establishment and
financing of new ventures.
ECM 304 Tax Accounting
Historical and Legal Background of Taxation in Nigeria, Tax administration in
Nigeria (Federal Board of Inland Revenue, State Board of Internal Revenue,
Objections and appeals), Distinction between Taxation of Income and the Taxation
of Capital, Basis period (commencement rule, change in Accounting date and
ceasation rule), Taxation of Employees and Sole Trader, Partnership Taxation,
Capital Allowances.
ECM 306 Brand Management
The need to introduce the students to brand creation which was done
earlier requires the affirmation of the process of brand management
which the course is expected to achieve.

Every student of enterprise creation must be able to practically assess
all sources of funding business enterprises, knowing the requirements
and how to meet these requirements. This course will focus on how to
practically assess such funds.

This course is expected to increase the student’s knowledge on ownership structure
of businesses and the inherent challenges of each. Cases of each of the various forms

ECM 101 Accounting for Non Accountants I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic principles and procedures
of accounting and accounting statements. Every entrepreneur is expected to understand
the concept of accounting information and accounting record keeping. This is what we
present through this first course in accounting to make the students understand
accounting through an introduction to its principles and concepts.
ECM 103 Sourcing Financial Resources
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic tools, sources and
concepts of financial decision making. It is a foundational course for entrepreneur to
know the fundamental sources of financial resources and the techniques of financial
decision making. The emphasis will be on the micro aspects of finance treated at an
introductory level. It is to make the students understand from the onset of their course
of study, the significance of finance in any business enterprise.
ECM 105 Concept of Entrepreneurship I
This course is expected to introduce the students to the fundamentals of
entrepreneurship and the basics required to imbibe the attitude of an entrepreneur. It
will introduce the unique characteristics of entrepreneurship and the process of
developing entrepreneurial spirit. It will also focus on entrepreneurial theories; elements
of successful entrepreneurship; the process of opportunity identification and product
development; entrepreneurial lifestyle; entrepreneurial goal setting and visioning.
ECM 107 Statistics for Managers I
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of statistics as a
relevant tool for all management students. It aims at empowering the students with the
required analytical skills for making inquiries in the social and management sciences. It
will introduce the students to the types, nature and uses of statistics, particularly from
the perspective of business decision making.
ECM 109 Understanding Microeconomics
This course is to introduce the basic concepts of microeconomics to the student with
the aim of presenting a proper perspective to the students on the theories of economics,
particularly from the micro point of view. It is expected that the understanding of the
micro-economic decision making process by the students will sharpen their ability to
operate effectively in the economic system.
ECM 111 Creativity and Innovation I
This course is designed to awake the creative minds of the students and sensitize them
towards realizing the fact that creativity is core to progress and success in life. At the
end of the semester, the students are expected to present an idea that could be further
developed into a product (in form of a good or service) or in form of an improvement
on an existing process of operations in any establishment.
ECM 113 Understanding the Business Structure
This course is designed to make the students understand the concept of business as an
activity and as an enterprise. It is not about the administration or management of
business enterprises, as this is a subject of another course. It is basically to introduce the
students to the theory of the business, and make them realize the basic requirements of
establishing a business, the purpose for doing so, the types of businesses, their
advantages, and disadvantages, the structure of business, and the underlying
assumptions guiding the successful operations of businesses in the global business
system.
ECM 115 Understanding Management
This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of management,
the management principles, theories and functions. With this course the students should
become conversant with what management is all about; i.e. What management is? What
managers do? Why managers do what they do?

This course is designed to introduce the students to the basic concepts of
communication in English Language since this is the language of communication to be
used throughout the course of study of the students and perhaps in the course of doing
business within the Nigerian Business Environment. The need to improve the

This course is a follow up to the first semester course in finance, and it is to further the

This course is to introduce the basic concepts of macroeconomics to the student with
the aim of presenting a proper perspective to the students on the macroeconomic
theories required to understand the economy. It is expected that the understanding of

ECM 112 Creativity and Innovation II
This course is designed to increase the students’ knowledge of creativity and
innovation in relation to organization management and success. It is a follow up to the
creativity course in the first semester and is required to further entrench the ideals of
creative and innovative management to the students. At the end of the semester, the
students are expected to create an enterprise that will be used as a vehicle to convey
the students’ creative idea (developed and approved in the first semester) into a

This course is to make the students understand the basic business mathematics,
particularly the required knowledge of mathematics that constitute one of the tools
required to acquire the process of studying and operating in the business system. The

between management theories and management models, Practice or management conduct as

students to learn from and in the process rediscover their hidden talents and
skills. The idea is to identify, at least, twelve to twenty successful
entrepreneurs from different business interests and use their cases to impart
