Australian Universities- A Step Forward In Education
The University of Queensland has applauded Westpac for its inspirational and philanthropic gift to Australia’s university students.
This week, Westpac announced the creation of its Bicentennial Foundation fund, which will provide $100 million for scholarships and awards for Australian university students, graduates and post-doctoral researchers.
The scholarships and awards will be granted in partnership with Australian universities.
UQ Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Advancement) Ms Clare Pullar said Westpac had made an extraordinary philanthropic endowment to higher education and it would help shape generations of leaders across every sector.
Ms Pullar also said that a new dawn of corporate philanthropy has been introduced in Australia and she also said that Westpac’s contribution in creating and visualizing such powerful opportunities for university students under graduates to post-doctoral researchers, especially in engagement with Asia, will transform leadership development of young people. She also believes that the effect will be profound and extremely good for the development of Australia.
On the other hand the University of Monash which is established in Melbourne has acquired UNIT4 software. UNIT4 already provides software solutions to more than 400 education and research institutions, making it the leading supplier to the sector in the UK and Scandinavia. It has operations in 26 countries worldwide, and recorded revenues of €490.5 million worldwide in 2013.
The country's universities have launched a new public awareness campaign, but say it is not a bid for more money ahead of next month's federal budget. Universities Australia, which funded the campaign through a commercial company, not taxpayer money, says it is about trying to start a national public debate. The campaign points to OECD figures showing Australia's public investment in tertiary education as a percentage of GDP is ranked 25th out of 30 advanced economies.
Universities are facing $2.3 billion in funding cuts that are yet to pass Federal Parliament.
