Topics: “Assessing new technologies, innovations & solutions available in the
market to ensure optimal end-to-end cold chain management”.
Currently Research & Safety Division is dealing with three different kinds of Temperature sensitive products. Following are the Categories of the same.
• Flammable Chemicals like Acetontirle/ Methanol etc • Certain Life Science & Health Care Products
• These Products are mainly Antibodies which are used in Research • Product from Abgiene, Abonova, Pierce
• Products are from Health care & Diagnostics Kits. • Source from Omega, Gensys etc.
Room Temperature
Global Temp Norms : 25 Degree
-20 Degree Temperature
Need to be packed in Dry Ice
2-8 Degree Temperature
Need to be packed with Cool Pack
Currently following are the challenges faced by Temperature sensitive products. Untrained Staff : I shared example of customer complaints where customer has received 28 Degree material in Frozen Condition which was send in Dry Ice
Delay in Delivery due to poor Transportation System: Due to absence of
Quality Infrastructure there is possibility of cold chain breakage. I shared incident where product was saved due to extra precaution taken by Warehouse staff while packing -20 Degree products in Thermacol Box with Dry Ice. Due to tight packing of boxes with help of tap, product storage condition were intact even after delay of 2 days from Transport Service Provider.
Space for Cold Chain Storage: Due to condition of Push Sales in Last few days of month.
The storing high volume becomes very difficult due to space constraint. It can be avoided with proper forecasting and planning module.
Data & Facts: o India has a total of roughly 5,300 cold storages with a capacity of 23 million metric tones. o The Indian food market is estimated at over $182 billion, and accounts for about 20 per cent of the total Indian retail market o India is the 2nd largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, with annual vegetable produce of around 85 million tone (9.1 per cent of global Produce) and annual fruit produce of around 45 million tone (8.4 per cent Of global produce). o Out of the roughly 130 million tones of fruit and vegetable produce, nearly 40 per cent gets wasted—enough to feed countries like Brazil and Vietnam o India is the largest producer of milk in the world, producing close to 100million tone, and accounting for nearly 17 per cent of the global production. About 35 per cent of this produced milk is processed. More than10 per cent of the annual milk production is lost because of inadequate storage facilities
Speakers in this Panel for Discussion: 1. Mr. Vikas Upadhyay, General Manager – Commercial Refrigeration, Carrier India 2. Mr. Chaitanya Prabhu, Senior Vice President & Head – Supply Chain Management, 3. Mr. K D Sathya Narayanan, GM - Material Management, Manipal Health Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. 4. Mr. Ramdas D. Jadhav, Manager - Order Fulfillment & Customer Service Supply Chain, Thermo Fisher Scientific India Pvt. Ltd.
Arshiya International Ltd.
Summary of discussion including Questions & Answers from Audience.
o How we can use Technology to check if there is breakage of cold chain for sensitive products like life saving drugs when it reaches in hands of Final Consumer.
Response from Ramdas : We do have technologies like Data loggers which can assure end user about the integrity of the products. Currently company llike Merck provide Data monitor with their anti-cancer drugs i.e. erbitux Argument from Mr. Sathya Naryanan : It is only limited for Highly expensive Products like erbitux. Why it is not there for all the products. Conclusion: There is need of viable solution which is affordable to common man. So he can check the integrity of sensitive products.
o Initiatives and support required from Government to improvised Cold Chain.
We concluded that there is need of spreading awareness among the Farmers who are actually going to be customer of Cold Chain. Companies like Carriers who are in to refrigeration and cold chain suppliers already in to talk with Government.
o Need of Technology Collaboration between Service Provider & Manufactures.
We discussed and concluded that there is need of Technology collaboration between service provider and manufacturing company. Mr. Chaityna Prabhu shared some of the example like how Railway initiatives of introducing Cold Chain will impact North Market.
o Various other topics discussed like
o o o Need of Innovations vs. Traditional method of storing perishable goods like Jute Bags, Leaves etc. Lack of Forecasting Skill which causing pressure on Storage System. Efforts from Cold Chain Company have to improvise their market volume by improving penetration etc.
