certainly these series of mergers n acquisitions have alerted the airline industry to wake up and perform better.. d indian airline performance ws becoming sluggish but now the heat is on n we can certainly expect a raise in services... n also its performance on international level

i feel the problem over here is that there r too many airlines in the market especially in india.....coz of these low cost airlines other market players like jet airways etc. r feeling threatened and r tryin to do cost cutting which is again decreasing the quality standards of the airlines

As of today, I know -

1. A lot of ongoing consolidation in the industry. With respect to change, yes there is a lot of change for M&A.
2. Service wise - differences do exist but are increasingly costly to maintain differentiation
3. Increasing fuel costs and taxation are driving LCC out of business as well

I feel this is the best time for the Airline industry for consolidation."Too many cooks spoil the broth" saying goes. This is rightly applicable for Indian Airline Industry. There is lot of concentration on only few sectors mostly metro and big cities like Bangalore,Hyderabad. So after consolidation airline will start looking at other cities. There is lot of scope of development in the country. When you compare the airline industry of US most of the cities are interconnected. This is not the case with India. So more cities needs to be interconnected to achieve growth. One of the big obstacles for growth is the ATF(Aviation Turbine Fuel).Airlines spend most of the revenues for paying taxes for ATF.This needs to be finetuned for the airlines to stay in green.Govt and Airline Sector need to work-out a methodology for this.Second comes the airline fare. When compared to railways the fares of Airlines are too high for a common man to travel. This needs to worked out cos airlines needs to run in profit. So all these are some of the challenges facing the Industry as of now.If we don't address these issues early airline industry is tough to survive in India.

its again the theodore way. Airlines must define their business broadly now not just airlines but as customer travel and satisfaction business.. then they beat any competition and succeed

India’s airlines now complain that fuel prices are 45 per cent or so of their operating expenses. (Changing that will face stiff opposition from states, which benefit from sales taxes on ATF.) They will claim that the actual price they face is higher than that faced by other airlines worldwide; but that is a fallacious argument. Where they compete with those airlines, they face a level playing field, able to buy ATF at cheaper international rates. The question is why they thought business plans could be imported from abroad to Indian conditions, and a very different cost structure. There is no reason why that would work in the airline industry, when it wouldn’t work in any other. Unfair, sure; but in a market economy, you have to expect unfairness and turn it to advantage

Last minute means better deals - Every once in a while you can get a great deal at the last minute. However, usually the best bets are advance purchases and checking out sales that tend to appear most often on Wednesdays.

2. You can change the name on a ticket - On some low cost airlines you can change the name on a ticket for a fee, but on most airlines, and especially when international travel is involved, there are no name changes allowed. If in question, read the rules before you buy or contact the travel agent/airline you intend to buy your ticket from.

3. You can book tickets more than a year in advance - Reservation systems are really only built to book up to a year in advance. Anything beyond 365 days from now can be requested, but you will wait for it to get confirmed, and for the price.

4. You can upgrade a ticket to first class for a nominal fee - Some charter airlines, and low cost airlines may offer this, but don't ask the Lufthansa agent if you can upgrade your New York to Frankfurt flight to first class for fifty bucks - the price difference will have a few more 00's in the equation.
