Are degrees becoming worthless?

no degress are not becoming worthless. many instititutes are worthless. if you have a degree from iim than its difficult for anyone to say its worthless. there have came many institutes which are not good and their no. has increased drastically due to which today anyone for whom in past due to less marks or financial problems are able to get degree. but i dont think we should concentrare on those degrees. we should think of degrees which have respect.same degree do it from topmost institute it is valued. do it from a normal college the degree is not that valued.

The institute providing the degree here matters a lots it is because of the institution that the importance of degrees is lowering. Getting a normal B.Com degree from best of the institutions can beat the a professional degree done from an institution which is not recignised where quality lacks.

Degrees are not worthless provided you take interest in whatever you do. Besides going in for a normal degree one can go in for various value added courses to complement one's specialisation.
And at the end of the day all depends on your attitude!!!
Try to make the best of whatever you do!!!

i feel the degrees will become worthless with time as more emphasis is given opn the knowledge acquired rather than mere qualifications.

I couldn't possibly disagree more with Sunandra:

The value of an education isn't in decline because of the large number of educated people that are delivered to the job market every year (I will adress this later on). It is declining because it isn't evolving along with the rest. It can be shown through the simple example of electronics. As it is, our electronic systems are very complex and it is almost impossible to learn every bit of knowledge that has been accumulating over the years. However, recent developments in IT make it possible to have access to all the knowledge there is at the push of a button. So using this technology, one doesn't have to remember everything by heart BUT one has to be able to understand things at a much faster pace. And this is where education falls short, focus is still too much on obtaining knowledge while understanding it is a second hand thought.

Going back to your argument, an education is anything but worthless. Education is more than just obtaining knowledge, it is the growth of an individual by challenging his intellect and bringing people into surroundings that enable them to see possibilities they couldn't see before. It gives students the chance to develop charracteristics that are needed to excel. I'm not saying that these functions can only be seen in higher education, but I am saying that it is an institution which is a lot more suited to do so.

As for the general decline of educations worth itself, I believe that a higher education will become the standard. Does this mean that its value will decline? No, it means that the society in which it developes raised its standard, but the people will be worth a lot more than they are now. For example: after you left highschool, you probably knew twice as much as your grandparents did at that stage even though everyone has had this education these days. So the education has actually risen in value. However, relative to society, the amount of information is still the same. People still know what they need to know, there is just much more that needs to be known...

importance of degrees has of course gone down......
people are only concerned of getting passing marks and not gaining quality knowledge........

i think the answer is yes and no, both.
degree is important. it gives a stand or level in academics. one cant get a decent job without a degree even though he has the skills.
but again what is the use of a degree if he dont have the knowledge which he must have as a degree holder. various universities are providing various course without the infrastructure in colleges. students just takes the courses for degree instead of interest. students are mugging books without any practical knowledge. i faced the same hurdles and also did the same. i felt very bad but what i can do.

Well,
I think Degrees have lost their importance in the contemporary world..
I wont blame the Indian Education System or Standards for that matter..
A majority of Parents are generally more bothered about the marks and the degree instead of the knowledge and the value addition their child is getting.. (NO HARD FEELINGS)...
The primary motive behind applying for a PG Degree is just a highly paid 9 - 6 job and not knowledge and practical exposure...
Degrees are just pursued to meet the eligibility requirements of the employer...
This really needs to be changed...
Though many people are not a part of this.. they can definitely advise others to act appropriately....

The reason is that students want more and more....they are not content and happy with what qualification they have.....

But education should not stop at any time and keep continuing....

Yup want of more and more can be viewed as desire to learn more and advance in life which is actually good. This is certainly not awful...

Today, more and more people are attending third level education, and many go on to post-graduate degrees. People specialize in subjects that were not dreamed of a century ago. However, the result has not been an increase in real knowledge, but a cheapening of education. In this essay I will discuss how education has become devalued.
Education is now something that can be purchased. Like a powerful new car or an architect-designed house, a degree or a post-graduate degree has become a luxury that everyone wants. But when everybody has something, that thing becomes worthless. Gold is sought after because it is expensive and hard to find, but if everybody changed their attitude to gold, its value would drop.
In the same way, education, like the currency of a bankrupt country, is becoming devalued as more people have degrees. It takes ever-higher qualifications to get a job. Once a degree-holder was respected and listened to. Now he or she is just another job-seeker or employee.
One effect of the rush towards degrees is that knowledge becomes less important. Other factors, such as influence, are more central in getting a job or a promotion when everyone has a qualification. A further point is that people lose respect for themselves. Since everybody has a degree, even degree-holders feel that what they have is almost worthless. More seriously, the pressure to have degrees results in a drop in quality. When thousands of people study in a college, the professors cannot possibly maintain standards. Furthermore, we need to question whether advanced education is suitable for everyone. Do

hey just Dont blindly copy paste my post Charan Kowtikwar........... write your own opinions

Absolutely not. This is evident from the fact that an MBA from any damn college is given importance as against work-experience.

Yes.. Though you top in exams, it wont help help. Having practical knowledge is of more use than bookish one..

This is not true that degrees are becoming worthless or students are moving to the post graduates programs. If you seriously attend colleges and study then a under graduate degree can also get you a job but the college or university should be good. Today lots of colleges and institute are opening everywhere so we should consider the reputation of college before taking admission.
