Are degrees becoming worthless?

Today, more and more people are attending third level education, and many go on to post-graduate degrees. People specialize in subjects that were not dreamed of a century ago. However, the result has not been an increase in real knowledge, but a cheapening of education. In this essay I will discuss how education has become devalued.
Education is now something that can be purchased. Like a powerful new car or an architect-designed house, a degree or a post-graduate degree has become a luxury that everyone wants. But when everybody has something, that thing becomes worthless. Gold is sought after because it is expensive and hard to find, but if everybody changed their attitude to gold, its value would drop.
In the same way, education, like the currency of a bankrupt country, is becoming devalued as more people have degrees. It takes ever-higher qualifications to get a job. Once a degree-holder was respected and listened to. Now he or she is just another job-seeker or employee.
One effect of the rush towards degrees is that knowledge becomes less important. Other factors, such as influence, are more central in getting a job or a promotion when everyone has a qualification. A further point is that people lose respect for themselves. Since everybody has a degree, even degree-holders feel that what they have is almost worthless. More seriously, the pressure to have degrees results in a drop in quality. When thousands of people study in a college, the professors cannot possibly maintain standards. Furthermore, we need to question whether advanced education is suitable for everyone. Does our entire population really need to spend years in school and college just to do fairly simple jobs?
In conclusion, there are many negative aspects to the increased emphasis on qualifications. If we want to maintain the value of education, we need to examine the emphasis we put on degrees.

degrees are becoming worthless because of standard of education has come down.Only passing the exams are not enough today, it does not show the true picture of a student.
Today students are gaining only text book knowledge but today for good job students need more practical knowledge therefore degrees becoming worthless

WEll the standard is getting lowered -- agreed but is it the only thing to be taken into consideration when the degree is concerened. Is it because of the standard of teaching that has losen its value responsible for lowering of demand of graduates or else.

i think degree is just a step for real & intellectual studies.... most of us do not even take degree that seriously in comparision with PG... the reason is that in PG atleast v can select the course according to our interests. Also every1 knows that the education level i PG is much of importance than in Degree...... the education system is highly responsible for every thing happening.....

But what if students dont opt for PG and look for jobs immediately after their graduation. Does that mean they have done nothing or is their degree useless.

In Harvard they are thinking of revising the education pattern by allowing teaching only by Professionals not academecians

i think our country is going far better then before. . towards achieving 2020 dreams as true

Dreams ???????? are you talking about today's Youth achieveing their dreams or something else ?? Here we are not talking about Our country's status as compared to our past. Please specify in detail what you want to say.

Well in that case i believe that those students r not capable for good jobs or in many cases they may not be in the condition to afford the higher educations.... I think these must study hard in degree so that they could grab the good positions in their jobs.....my views may differ for the students of Endd, medical and else hightec studies....

I feel more than affordablity a human beong that has capablity and confidence in self can do anything even if one doesnt opt PG. It is not always true that being from glorious fields determine they definetly going to grab good positionsssss.

It's so true..... but my views r devoted to the unconditional env of the educational system... the determinant students r beyond the imagination of all these... they can proceed in their lives even with little edu....

One thing you have truely said and that is the unconditional environment of our educational system. The quality of education is unevenly spread taking into consideration the whole of India - Well Said.

well i dont think so...to get the first break you need to have a good degree..else we will never suceed

A good degree???????? that's the very important questionin front of everyone. A good degree means which one? does it denote a bachlers degree or post graduate one??

If the same is adopted in India it will be truely a great revolution in our education system. Then one can predict some more of professionals having an really good knowledge and first hand experience of all the giudance and thoughts shared by professionals during their acadamic years of life.

Degrees become worthless only in case a person has acquired only the qualification but not the skill sets / practical applicability of knowledge

well said truely a degree becomes useless when a person genuinely has zero interest in his/her studies. Then getting a degree for the sake of getting a degree is utter waste of time spent in mugging up things and finally omiting the same in the examinations.

well i have just begin with m pg..
now pursuing and moving forward everyday into the course..
and lookin into the present market it feels as if m degree will soon loose its significance..
infact candidates with qualification of being an mba from any tom, dick n harry college..
to even best of b-school..
really is not what most good companies r looking for any longer..
and to know what is that cutting edge skill one needs to have to crack it is a big "?" mark..
