AIRPORT PRIVATIZATION
The WTTC has noted with interest the Government's decision to privatize the two Metro Airports of Delhi and Mumbai.
This is hopefully the first step towards providing India with many more privately owned Domestic and International Airports which can serve as the sinews of a dynamic aviation system catering to business, tourism, cargo and trade.
Since Delhi and Mumbai will be the first airports to benefit from this process, it is sincerely hoped that the process of their privatization provides transparent and efficient examples for the others to follow.
The WTTC would recommend the following
Overseas investors/technical managers should be given maximum freedom in the management and operation of the Airports. It is noted that the Government will confine itself to overseeing security and air traffic control.
It should be understood that overseas investors are bringing in billions of dollars for airport improvements. Therefore there should be no restriction on the commercial activities within the airport which includes Hotels, Restaurants, Shops, Duty Free, Shopping, parking, Transit Facilities, Sports, Gymnasia and health spas, banking and entertainments.
