The Program

The Program

Robert Cook RGU Alumni and CEO

Aberdeen Business School offer a full-time MBA, part-time MBA, and online MBA (e-MBA).

There are currently four specialist degrees:

MBA Oil and Gas Management available full-time, executive part-time and online study modes.

The energy sector is facing some profound changes due to factors such as climate change and environmental issues, changing patterns of viability in exploration and development, corporate governance, attitudes towards health and safety, an ageing workforce, fragmentation of the value chain and the diversification of activities within organisations. The sector also operates within an international environment and is thus influenced by international conditions and macro-economic forces. Indeed, competition is forcing all organisations to concentrate on developing strong management competencies. All these issues have been taken into account when developing the course materials.

The MBA Oil and Gas Management degree is designed to provide experienced practitioners in the oil and gas sector with the advanced business, management and leadership skills needed to function at a strategic level as a contemporary energy manager.

The course is aimed at middle to senior managers or those aspiring to these positions within the Oil and Gas industry.

This master of business administration degree offers significant choice to you in terms of oil and gas subject breadth, study mode and career path. The choice of energy industry focused modules caters for the full spectrum of oil and gas strategic management activities.

MBA Transport Strategy and Management available in an online study mode.

Bus, rail and air operators are complex organisations working in a constantly evolving, highly competitive business environment. Senior transport managers increasingly have to have advanced business strategy and leadership skills to operate at a strategic level. Similarly, those leading local authority transport operations at local or regional level are also required to have an in depth understanding of how such large commercial organisations manage and operate their business, so that they can manage local transport systems effectively and develop best infrastructure and services.

To operate at the highest standard possible in a complex environment, middle to senior transport managers in the private and public sector need to constantly demonstrate advanced business strategy and leadership skills. With this in mind Aberdeen Business School and The Centre for Transport Policy have established a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Transport Strategy and Management. It will be the UK’s only Association of MBAs (AMBA) accredited management course developed to meet the needs of established transport managers working in the private and public sector.

MBA Agribusiness Management and MBA Food Business Management available in full-time and online study modes. This degree is delivered in conjunction with the Scottish Agricultural College.

The agricultural industry is currently undergoing significant changes and has to work in a more market orientated environment in order to fulfil consumer expectations and respond to increasing environmental concerns. Those working in these industries will require a range of management skills, a strategic perspective and greater familiarity with the policy environment.

The Food Business Management route has more emphasis on distribution channels.

All courses are accredited by the Association of MBAs

The MBA is a Learning and Leadership experience:

• The learning experience for on-campus students takes place in our state-of-the-art facilities based in the Norman Foster building at the university's Garthdee campus in Aberdeen. The online students work on a virtual learning platform that allows for high levels of student and tutor interaction.

• The leadership experience is a facilitated by interaction with the content and people on the course and sustained through our alumni community. There is a leadership week run each year for all MBA programmes.

• There is a project placement experience available for students on the full-time course.

• We have an active research team and the MBA programme is also strengthened by the activities of the School Centres such as those in Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Transport Policy and Public Policy and Management.

At this stage each student is provided with an academic supervisor who is familiar with the subject area.

Learning Experience: The online learning mode is delivered via the University's virtual campus. This allows for collaborative learning through the use of technologies such as teleconferencing, chat, discussion forums and shared working areas. Students are supported 1 month in advance of studying through our MBA support module. This module prepares the student for their studies ahead.

Each module has a study guide explaining the resources available, the learning approach and any special requirements or deadlines. The module is divided into learning topics that directly reflect the taught syllabus. Each of these topics has a number of additional resources for the distance learner: [1] topic notes providing a commentary on the topic that replicates the lecture material; [2] annotated PowerPoint slides of the on-campus lectures; [3] where appropriate, an audio or talking head PowerPoint summary of key learning points (usually about 10−15 minutes) or complete video of the lecture (this may be broadcast live on some occasions); [4] where available, an eBook chapter or digitised reading or hyperlink to such a resource; [5] individual and group activities that are facilitated by asynchronous and synchronous communication technologies and [6] an online support module.

In addition, the online tutor engages with teams and individuals through the asynchronous discussion forum, group email and individual confidential email, which are the key resources to support online interaction. The online chat facility, webcam conferencing software (ePop) and Skype can be used to promote real time social interchange and can also be used for group tutorials. Due to worldwide time differences, the latter is seen as complementary rather than core to the online learning methodology. Although the online learning mode provides flexibility as to where and when students study, the delivery model does not permit total flexibility. Controlling pace has benefit in enabling membership of a student cohort and enhancing student success. Online learning is learner centred, enabling students to assume responsibility for their own learning. As far as possible in respect to appropriate pedagogy the approach that is adopted in this course is the learning team centred model. This simulates the on-campus learning experience in a virtual classroom in which learners interact with each other to expand their ideas via electronic forums and communications tools. The model assumes that learning is a social activity and the student can receive feedback from the learning network by verbalising their thoughts. Online learning is never static, but reflects the dynamism of learning communities. This facilitates greater cognitive development, critical thinking and the discovery of new knowledge compared to learning alone.

Special condition: Students must participate in online group activities to pass modules
