Introduction Kanban Definition Push Vs Pull System What do Kanbans Do ? Types of Kanban Types of Kanban Signal Advantages
Kanban
? ?
? ?
Kan- ‘Card’, Ban – ‘Signal’ Simple parts movement system using cards from one work station to another A visual tool to achieve Just in Time Production Developed at Toyota in 1950s – Managing material flow on Assembly Line
PUSH VERSUS PULL SYSTEM
?
?
Push : based on forecast rather than actual customer demand Pull : on actual consumer demand
WHAT DO KANBANS DO ?
?
? ?
?
?
Communication device Act as a Purchase Order for your supplier Work Order for Production Dept. Tells when there is a problem in the process Assures there is enough material in hand to make what is needed
TYPES
Raw Material Kanban ? tells supplier to send how much of a particular item at a particular place ? How does it works ? ? Identify no. of parts used to manufacture a product ? Calculate Lead Time ( amt of time taken to order and deliver ) ? Determine the demand for the product ? No of parts used is multiplied by no of products demanded ? Goal is to order parts
Work-in Process Kanban
?
? ?
?
?
?
A one piece flow when products move one at a time from one process step to another How does it works ? Process times at each station is calculated If a station has to take significantly more time than the previous stations, kanbans are put in to keep material batching to a minimum If a station takes twice as long time as station before, a kanban half again the size is put in place A person at a previous station can help a person with more work intensive station
Finished Goods Kanban
?
?
?
?
?
Demand for a particular product is tracked Calculate the safety stock Calculate TAKT time (how many products needs to be made per day) Set up Finished Goods in the Shipping Area with the amount of product that has been determined as a safety stock Assumption : Production has the capacity to make the necessary amount of product in req time to keep Finished Goods Kanban filled
TYPES OF KANBAN SIGNALS
?
?
Calculated amt of material kept in a designated space such a bin or between the lines on the workbench or a work floor Card – used to tell amt of material to be made or ordered
?
Markings on a bin that determine when more material needs to be ordered or made
ADVANTAGES
?
? ?
?
? ?
?
Simple and Understandable Quick and precise information Low cost associated with transfer of information Quick response to changes Avoids Overproduction Minimizes the waste Delegates responsibility to line workers
