A recent survey in America estimates that close to half of all (46.9%) companies with more than 1,000 employees now scrutinise staffers’ e-mail and that another 28% say they intend to do so soon. Which means that 74.9% or three out of every four big companies in the US could soon be monitoring their employees’ e-mail!
CBS News says Proofpoint CEO Gary Steele is in the business of helping bosses monitor employees’ e-mail! Sophisticated software has been developed to scan outgoing e-mail for everything from offensive language to trade secrets and to then alert the boss. Nearly a third of big US companies (31.6%) admit to having fired employees for improper e-mail use and more than half (52.5%) have disciplined staffers.
No similar studies have been done in the case of Indian corporates. However, it would be logical to expect that some of the tens of thousands of those working in India’s booming IT sector would be shooting off personal e-mail once in a way if for no other reason than to alleviate assembly-line fatigue of a virtual reality kind!
The fact that the Indian media has hardly reported instances of employees being disciplined or dismissed for improper e-mail use could indicate that this is not happening in a big way. Or may be American companies have outsourced to India just their back-office operations and not e-mail misuse!
