New Delhi/Mumbai: The arrest of the 10 henchmen of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim by Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday has sparked speculation about a possible split in the ranks of Dawood gang. The Mumbai Police arrested them after they were sent to India by the authorities in Dubai.

On Tuesday, Mumbai was abuzz with rumours about a crack in the D-gang. There were also speculation that Dawood simply did away with these men as he didn't need them any more.

While Mumbai police maintain that it’s a high-profile catch, sources indicate that the arrests might not be that huge a blow for Dawood. However, for the Chhota Shakeel gang – a breakaway of the D-company -- the arrests undoubtedly come as a huge blow. Two brothers-in-law of Chhota Shakeel are among those arrested on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, confusion prevails over the way the entire operation was conducted and there’s a sharp difference in statements emanating from the high echelons of Mumbai Police itself.

"It was an operation involving several agencies both Indian and those of the UAE. They were arrested by the Dubai police and were deported this morning. We are still referring to their dossiers. The Dubai police had rounded all of them, up after it cracked down on the Dawood syndicate there a fortnight ago. We too had been in touch with our central intelligence agencies and the deportation became possible after efforts through diplomatic channels," says Mumbai Police commissioner, A N Roy.

While Roy insists it’s a deportation, Joint Commissioner of Police Meera Bronkar chooses to differ.

“It is not an extradition and it’s not a deportation. It’s a special operation carried out by investigative agencies,” says Bronkar.

The Mumbai Police are also trying to figure out as to what cases these men should be charged under.
