10 careers that grew In 2006

The career marketplace has undergone a sea change. In 2006, new careers opened up -- like in biotechnology and the retail segment -- management emerged as the backbone of every organization -- including hospitals -- and the banking, advertising and fashion industries lured talent.

Retail
It is estimated that 8 million people will be required in organised retail by 2011. Of these, about 500,000 would be working in malls. "There is presently a boom in the retail sector," says Shikha Srivastava, 30, a Lucknow-based officer at Timesjobs.com

Payment structure
You can start out as a sales executive and expect anywhere between Rs 70,000 and Rs 120,000 a year. From there to a department manager or floor supervisor takes two years. At this level, salaries range between Rs 120,000 and Rs 200,000 a year. In another year-and-a-half, you can aim for the store manager's slot. With salaries from Rs 400,000 to 1100,000 per annum, this is a category where the shortfall is most pronounced. Then you move on to become an area manager, take charge of a few stores and make anywhere between Rs 12,00,000 and Rs 25,00,000 a year. The ultimate goal is to make it to the grade of an operations head or the chief of strategy and planning, where seasoned retailers make Rs 20,00,000 to Rs 50,00,000 a year.

Job prospects
The top end of organised retail has room for people who bring in strategy and planning, and have an operations background. There's also a demand for supply chain managers and visual merchandisers, who are mainly responsible for the look and feel of the store. The bulk of the demand is for the frontliners -- sales executives, department managers and store managers.

Information Technology

The IT boom, it seems, is here to stay.

A November 2006 study on 'Staffing Asia-Pacific's Growing Networking Infrastructure,' conducted by research firm IDC across 12 countries, including India, says India will have a shortfall of nearly 1,37000 skilled networking professionals by 2009.

Job profile
The designations vary depending on the area of specialisation. In networking, for example, some designations can be network systems administrator, networking engineer, network manager, infrastructure manager and network systems analyst. For professionals with advanced networking skills, that could vary from systems architect to VoIP engineer/architect. Other job profiles include systems analyst, data warehousing consultants, e-commerce engineers, network designer/LAN service manager, and transcriptionists.

Payment structure
The remuneration varies depending on an individual's certification/specialisation and the kind of organisation s/he joins.

"For a low degree of specialisation, the starting salary could vary from Rs 120,000 to Rs 180,000 per year in a small organisation to Rs 240,000 to Rs 300,000 per month in an MNC," says Shikha. "Advanced specialisations can command a salary of up to Rs 200,000 a month, depending upon the years of experience. In case of international opportunities, plenty of which exist, the remuneration is even greater."

Job prospects
The IDC study says more than 55 per cent of India's shortfall by 2009 will be of professionals with advanced skills in the areas of network security and new network developments, such as IP telephony and wireless networking. Top three skill-set needs over the next 12 to 24 months, as per the study, are security skills, wireless network skills, and network design. Embedded/telecom, digital signal processing, hardware design, wireless communications, database management, and application software are other areas where professionals continue to be in demand.

With the recent successes of cloning and genetic mapping, the thrust is on biotech research as never before.

Biotechnology is an integration of several sciences applied to living cells. It is an interdisciplinary science encompassing not only biology, but also other subjects including physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering.

Job profile
"The work of biotechnologists is scientific and research oriented. The main areas of work are in production of various bio-processed material, marketing of biotechnology products and processes in various areas, research, and bioinformatics (the application of information technology to the management of biological information). Job profiles include genetic engineer, research scientist, and those in the areas of work in biotechnology," says Shikha.

Payment structure
"With a bachelors in biotechnology, one can expect a starting salary of Rs 120,000 to Rs 180,000 per year. With a postgraduate degree, entry level salaries may go up to Rs 300,000 per year. Most biotechnologists find employment on a large scale in research laboratories run by the Government of India," says Shikha.

Industry insiders feel this is a huge untapped market. Of an estimated insurable 300 million people, the present life insurance coverage is only 24 per cent. And of a retired population of 30 million, the present pension coverage is just 1 million.

Job profile
"A person interested in working in the field of insurance can either work in an office in one of the areas of insurance (life, general, etc), as an agent, or as an insurance surveyor. The work of an actuary ( who works in the insurance field) involves the calculation of insurance risk, premiums, and pension programmes. In an insurance company, a person can take a job in administration (for example, dealing with claims), development (marketing, procurement of business, etc), accounts, or investment ( investment of the insurance company's funds)," says Shikha.

Payment structure
"Apart from the pay, the incentive is very attractive -- cash as well as kind. So, the perks are better than the pay. In the private sector, starting salaries are in the range of Rs 96,000 to Rs 144,000 per year. Management graduates can start with Rs 180,000 to Rs 300,000 per year," says Shikha.

Job prospects
There are plenty of jobs, in both government and private sectors. In fact, the estimated requirement for trained professionals is expected to be more than 30,000 over the next two to three years. Growth in the insurance profession depends totally on the individual.
