POLITICS AND ELECTIONS

POLITICS AND ELECTIONS

There is the parade of criminals and clowns,
In jubbas and bright evening gowns.
They are standing for election,
For us to mark our selection,
To decide whether the nation will collapse or bounce.

If you condemn a terrorist,
You are branded a fascist.
This is one of the dirty tricks,
Of election politics,
To call a criminal a pacifist.

The political parties in India are engaged in hand-to-hand combat and using all unethical means to garner the support of MPs for the crucial trust vote. Betting community is busy. MPs are offered bribes in tens of crore rupees, offered ministerial posts, and anything they ask for! Splinter political groups demand plum posts, positions and favours to their own people in the government departments.

Booth capturing is a type of electoral fraud, found primarily in India, in which party loyalists "capture" a polling booth and vote in place of legitimate voters to ensure that their candidate wins. Though it is a kind of voter suppression, unlike other forms of voting fraud, booth-capturing is a malpractice witnessed mainly in India and the least subtle of all.

Almost every state in the country has witnessed some booths being captured either by the ruling or opposition parties, though it is disproportionately widespread in states in North India like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and neighboring areas.

One party is demanding removal of Union Finance Minister, Minister for Petroleum and recall of some IFS officers, to vote for the existing government. Mayawati (UP Chief Minister) is offered nothing less than the Prime Ministerial post! Mayawati is the one who gave religious color to the nuclear deal! Suddenly she said the deal is "anti-muslim". Muslims were surprised as to why the deal is anti-muslim.

Indo-US Nuclear deal is forgotten for a while. Rightly, Left parties are being held responsible for the political mess India is in today.

Under such pathetic situations, whether it is really worth supporting any government at the centre? What sort of governance one can expect from such a bunch of people – called Members of Parliament?
