GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is a matter of great concern in today’s scenario. Average temperature all over the world is 0.6 degree Celsius more as compared to the temperature of hundred years ago.
Disrespecting our mother earth, exploiting her to the greatest extent possible by only snatching away everything from her without thinking about the consequences or ill-effects; result in global warming.
The rise in temperature is due to the ill-effect of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, CFC and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. It is expected the temperature will increase more and more in the coming years.
The total quantity of the greenhouse gases is increasing day by day. Out of all the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide contributes most (55%) to turn our atmosphere hotter. Wherefrom is this carbon dioxide generated? It is generated from burning of fossils fuels for transport, to produce electricity, for manufacturing activities, cooking, heating and deforestation.
Next is methane to lead us to destruction (20% of the total green house gases present in the atmosphere). It is produced in the large amount during rice cultivation and from natural gas swamps. Again CFC is used for refrigeration and propellants.
The presence of all this green house gases will lead to:
Rise in the sea level due to thermal expansion of water and melting of glaciers.
Alter the climatic pattern. It will lead to extreme climate, too much cold or too much monsoon.
More flood in coastal areas and low-lying lands. Cities like London, Washington will be affected.
Disasters like tsunami will take place.
More drought will take place, change in food growing areas.
Less supply of drinking water due to changes in the rainfall pattern.
Some species of plants and animals will be no more. This will lead to imbalance in eco system.
The areas which did not know about the disease like malaria will be affected by it and will die as they do not have
natural resistance to malaria. More cholera, jaundice, dysentery will take place.
Vast population will shift place to cope up with changes in the atmosphere. Mentally people will be agitated and disturbed. They will suffer more from psychological disease. Too much mental pressure may lead to conflicts and war.
Some of the major environmental concerns are:
1) Natural resources are scarce and running out. It is estimated by 2027 coal will be exhausted and 2052, the iron mine will be over and by 2078 all oil fields will dry up. Corporate treat the air, water and soil as free commodities. The continuous economic expansion generates large profits at the public costs and the deterioration of the environment.
2) Many individual processes result in toxic residues and inert materials as byproducts, which are now either discharged as air or water pollutants or buried as liquid or solid wastes. These toxic byproducts have an obvious social cost, both immediate and long term.
3) The exhaust from a diesel engine contains about 900 chemical compounds. The level of nitrous oxides and caps on monoxide has to be checked. Hence the need for lead free petrol.
4) Depletion of ozone layer which protects life against harmful violate radiation. It is harmful for life and creates disorder.
5) Poisonous gas released in the air: on December 3, 1984, some 2,000 people were killed and more than 200,000 injured when a cloud of the poisonous methyl isocyanate gas was accidentally released from the plant of union carbide company in Bhopal.
6) Exploitation of the land and water for growing housing and industrial needs. In Mumbai, near Powai, there is a river named Mithi . however, first the airport authorities and then the MMRDA and private builders and finally the illegal residents reclaimed it so much that it created havoc in a city like Mumbai and took over 200 lives and caused damage to the property to the tune of over Rs.50,000 Crores.
