Hello fellow managers,
I am based in japan, and planning to work on a contract pharma-manufacturing firm. I would like to analyse the firm, using strategic tools, and make recommendations for their expansion in Asia. They are operating only in America an Europe. My objective is to convince them about the potential of Asia-Pacific and bring them to this region, which has many advantanges to the company as well as the Asian economies. I spoke to two companies and they are interested in my approach.

When I proposed to my supervisor, he kept asking me, rather blasting me with questions, as to how will you measure the data, and test the hypothesis? My null hypothesis is "Strategic alliance is benefecial for the company to expand in Asia", but my boss asks me that it is not possible to use the past data to project future alliances or potential.

Could some one guide me how to begin about? What tools can I employ in this case? Thanks a ton in advance.

Sincerely
VSB.

when it is pharma company, check its market share. the drugs whetther are Generic or....? check the amount meant to be invested in R & D of Vital Drugs. also check the Usage of these Drugs? (Elastic or Inelastic).

when we talk of pharma firms, we mean a lot by the Value Addition made by them. similarly the cost of the Drugs is Vry less, but Selling price is High.
hence this parameter is important for the Value Addiion made bythe com.

you can also slake out the importance the Asia-pacific GOVT. spend on Medical AIDS to different count. also occurence of natural calamities is also high in these areas, also keep in mind the Life expectancy of people.

the lawsuits against pharma cos. are not that strigent in this region. the com. can conduct a good R&D in this area.
also there are TAX benefits for com. investing in R&D.

First of all, we need to know what are the things you put in front of the manager. Also, what questions he blasted.

What answers you could come up with.

Please give a jist about the two companies you had a talk with and also what all research work you have already done which would help us further understand the opportunity cost etc.

Waiting for your reply.

Dear folks, I think my mail was not direct. Let me rephrase it, and apologies for confusing.

I am planning to work for contract pharma-manufacturing companies (e.g., Albany Molecular Research, Patheon.com etc). What I would like to do:

1. I would like to perform a strategic analysis of the firm(s) or one firm, using strategic tools, and make recommendations for their expansion in Asia. They are laregly operating in America an Europe. My objective is to convince them about the potential of Asia-Pacific and bring them to this region, which has many advantanges to the company as well as the Asian economies. They seem to be intereste in my suggestion of doing this study/analysis.

2. I proposed this to my supervisor, and this was my summary to him.
I told him that I plan to analyse the existing alliance in the pharma companies and identify which provides better results, including financial, product and market leadership. I proposed interviewing pharma company reps, surveys, questionnaires etc for this activity. He replied saying that he is not sure whether the proposed research will answer my research question. He says, since you want to find a growth strategy for the company. You will ask the potential customers or partners to set up a particular form of alliance to penetrate the chosen market area, i.e, Asia. My question is whether it will be able to get a reliable result. In my view, they may not be able to give you a concrete answer. They have take into account many factors to come up with a particular decision.

3. He again replied, saying that these kind of questions will get answers about their successful alliances. But, does the past experience of the firms the answer for their expansion to Asia-Pacific region. Surely, it is not. Many factors must be considered in selecting an appropriate entry or expansion strategy. Instead of asking the past, asking their intention about their future strategy might be better. Actually, the latter one is your original design.
So, my suggestion is to polish your original design to obtain reliable data and useful data. Please tell me what data will you collect, from whom and how are you planning to proceed. It is an interesting problem to study, so please reply soon with respones.
--------

I would like to receive your suggestions and also do my homework before working on the proposal.

thank you pratik, vishal, and vjaquarian. Look forward to your quick responses and help.
