Description
The presentation describing on what is work measurement why it is required and what are the advantages of the same.
WORK MEASUREMENT
DEFINITION
? Work Measurement( WM) is the application of
techniques designed to establish the time taken for a qualified worker to carry out a task at a defined rate of working ? WM is not a single technique but a family of techniques any one of which can be used
THE PURPOSE OF WM
? To eliminate unnecessary movement
? To eliminate ineffective time
? WM findings may implicate several departments ? The Work Study may find that an expensive
machine is idle for long periods
THE PURPOSE OF WM (CONTD)
? The Planning Department may discover that
Marketing is unable to successfully predict and execute sale of a decent size batch ? The Marketing Department may feel constrained by the Top Mgt Policy of accepting every variation asked for by the customers ? The MD has to swallow the fact that this is not the way to retain customers
USES OF WM
? Compare alternative methods choosing the
one taking the least time ? To balance the work of the members of a team so that each member has a task which takes an equal time ? To determine in association with the worker and machine a multiple activity charts, the number of machines the worker can operate ? Set time standards for each operation
EXAMPLE OF MULTIPLE ACTIVITY CHART
? Page 123 of Kanawaty Book ? Task: Inspection of catalyst in a converter- 4
types of workers involved -Electrician & Mate, Fitter & Mate, Rigger, Process Workers working in that sequence with the final task being done by the Electrician & Mate – 6 hours ? The improved method took 4 hours
MULTIPLE ACTIVITY CHART

? ? ? ? ? ?
Workshop Repairs
Remove Top Inspect/Adjust Catalyst Replace Top Secure Top Remove Tackle
Replace Heaters 6 HOURS TO 4 HOURS by reducing the ineffective time between Workshop Repairs & Replace Heaters and between Remove Top & Replace
USES OF WM (CONTD)
? To provide the basis for Production Planning &
Control, for a better layout, for process planning, for establishing JIT system ? To provide information for estimating tenders, selling prices and delivery dates ? To set standards of machine utilisation and labour performance- facilitates incentive schemes ? To provide data for labour cost control and fixing standard costs
BASIC PROCEDURE
Select the work to be measured Record all the relevant data Examine the recorded data Measure the quantity of work involved in each element in terms of time using an appropriate WM technique ? Compile the standard time for the operation ? Define precisely the series activities and the method of operation and issue the compiled i.e. as the standard
? ? ? ?
WORK SAMPLING
? Sampling the number of machines that are
working at any one time ? Technique of Sampling: random touring of the factory noting which machines are idle and the cause of each stoppage ? The number of observations will be statistically determined
WORK SAMPLING (CONTD)
? At 95% level of confidence the statistical
computation dictates that 75 observations at random are needed to arrive at a fairly reliable estimate of the no. of machines lying idle ? An 8 hour shift is divided into 10 minute slots which means 48 slots ? The slots for visit chosen could be by using the random numbers table
AN EXAMPLE
? After 75 observations it was found that 82.7% of
machines are working at any particular point of time ? 16.3% are lying idle- for repairs 2.7%, for lack of supplies 8.0%, for personal reasons 1.3%, just lying unused 5.3%
