If the central government has its way, India Inc will soon get more corporate honchos, straight out of top-notch B-schools along with more IIT tech grads. The Planning Commission has proposed a plan which includes setting up eight new IITs and seven new IIMs among other institutes. The government feels that increasing the number of IITs and IIMs will add to the number of executives and tech wizards that the country needs and beef up its presence in the scope of research. And that India thus would be set to take on the world, especially China, by producing enough managers and software pros for the next decade and also marching ahead in the area of R&D where the Communist nation always seems a few steps ahead of us. One point raised has been that perhaps the government should focus more on better medical schools. Another that having more IITs and IIMs will simply fritter the premium on quality that these institutes have. Can a mere increase in numbers guarantee a consistency in the quality of education imparted? Or will the move merely lower quality and dilute the prestige of these premium institutes by turning them into commonplace schools that churn out dozens of average professionals?

It will help India but the brand image of both the instis will be lost.People and more imp corporates talk about these insti's cos they are very tough to get-in.Once we open more IITs and IIMs getting into these instis are no more a dream but becomes a norm.

More imp, these instis don't have sufficient no.of faculty to train the students on par with international level. If we are planning to open more instis its gng to add fuel to fire instead of putting it down. They don't have proper infra to admit more no.of students.

So my call would be to stop this act of opening more IITs and IIMs.Instead plz try to make the existing non-IITs to try to match the IIT mark.Try to make the insti to be research oriented so that the students coming out the non-IIT will be better than where they are today.

I will close the discussion wit the simple eg. of retaining the brand name.

Think about the brand image of IT industry about 2-3 yrs ago.It was a dream for many to get a jon in IT companies, bcos they have only recruited only creme-le-creme of all the instis. But today it is no more a dream for many cos they are recruiting in thousands and today they are feeling the pain of the education system in India.People coming out of college are not industry-ready.They have to now give spl training to the college come-out to blend for their env.

So plz dunt spoil the brand name of those instis. We have a better solution than that.
