WIKILEAKS DECODED - PART I

Those who expect moments of change to be comfortable and free of conflict have not learned their history[/b] - Joan Wallach Scott[/b]

Who in today’s world is not familiar with the term WikiLeaks? However WikiLeaks is not just a term, it is a legend albeit a controversial one. A few years ago an unknown gentleman (whether he is a gentleman or not is also a big controversy) called Julian Assange puts up a website that allegedly carried leaked versions of documents and communications on extremely sensitive state subjects. Now the question people asked was “Who the hell is Julian Assange?” Well according to Julian Assange himself “He is Australia's most famous ethical computer hacker”[/b] Wow! That’s impressive. Well anyway so what happens after this gentleman launches this website. The answer is simple. All hell breaks loose and that too with a vengeful fury. Why does this happen? The answer is again very simple. One of the states listed on this website is a mighty power (read mightiest), engaged in a series of highly controversial & costly wars abroad, and the leaks put a big question mark on the entire authority of the working machinery of that state itself! (No points for guessing which state I am referring to) A string of apologies are offered to friendly nations worldwide by this mighty state (Of course they have to save their face and have to be diplomatic). Bureaucrats who have already gone deathly pale thinking of the dreaded consequences and politicians whose faces have turned a brilliant mixture of red and purple try to patch up in advance on many issues likely to emerge! Survival against all odds has become the need of the day for this state. But wait there is more to come. The website promises more releases and the releases get deadlier by the minute. Nations unite and work as a team to track down the site's founder and administrator and finally one of them gets hold of him. So is this the end of the story. Sorry but this was just the beginning.

I cordially welcome you all to the world of WikiLeaks controversy. A single individual has challenged the power and status of the superpower that's the United States of America. Not only that but also he has challenged the reputations of many others. A single individual versus a host of nations. Perhaps for the first time in modern history, one man has questioned the loopholes in the working machinery of the government of many nations. Perhaps for the first time, world governments realised that how susceptible they are to what a single man can do to them. Perhaps for the first time ever, media and its unchecked power to create perfect transparency are under scrutiny.

Julian Assange obviously has become an extremely popular figure in today’s world. Many people will disagree with this stating that “he is a notorious figure and not a popular one”. To this I have one thing to say. Some years back I had seen a movie called Guru starring Abhishek Bacchan, Aishwarya Rai and Mithun Chakraborty. The movie was loosely based on the life and character of Dhirubhai Ambani. There is a dialogue in this movie where Abhishek Bacchan visits a minister and in reply to a question posed by the minister says that “Jab log tumhari buraai karne lage to samjho ki tum tarakki kar rahein ho”. The literal translation in English is “When people start cribbing and complaining against you then you are making a progress in life”. Same is the case with Julian Assange.

JULIAN ASSANGE – FIGURATIVE LOOK AT HIS DOINGS (THE MACRO-ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE)[/b]

If you are given a choice on how to die, which one would you prefer: Slow Death or Fast Death. It is a question of perspective. Fast death is easier according to me since the mind does not get enough time to feel the pain. Yes death is always painful but in fast death at least things end quickly. The real agony comes when you are inflicted with infinite small yet painful cuts on your body, and death arrives through blood-loss, slowly and steadily. It’s visceral, it’s bloody and yes it’s extremely painful both physically and psychologically.

Julian Assange or for the matter of fact WikiLeaks does precisely that. From diplomats to politicians to bureaucrats, everyone is standing on the edge of a precipice, awaiting the next cut to their standing, the next blow to the carefully built disguise that has been holding the reputations for long. Nations are not ready to engage in business with other nations as suspicions builds up slowly eating up the words called faith and trust. The entire world economy at some point of time will come to a standstill. Thanks to Julian Assange. In fact it is so easy to imagine the role WikiLeaks is playing. WikiLeaks is acting as the huge catalyst for infuriated uncertainties among various nations. WikiLeaks is eating up the economy in trying to bring complete transparency.

JULIAN ASSANGE – FIGURATIVE LOOK AT HIS DOINGS[/b] (THE MICRO-ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE)[/b][/b]

If someone puts a secret camera and microphone inside your home and records everything you do. And then promises to release the stuff bit by bit, on some damned website, over a long period of time. The intolerable pain of having to wait for what's coming next can tear the family and their reputation apart. Our lives are always in mixed colours. Some incidents are dark, some a mixture of dark and grey, some others that are really important in red. With WikiLeaks getting up to the sleazy act of looking into everyone’s life with a magnifying glass, our lives have become open to others as has other people’s lives become open to us and it's never good for anyone. There's no person in the world who will want to live with his family any longer if the complete history of every single conversation that the family has ever done is made transparent. That's how the psychology of human beings works. We accept other people in our life on the basis of relative averages. On an average, things work out just fine as the plus points outweigh the minus points or are at least equal to the minus points. Try finding a person known to you, who has never spoken ill about you and your search, will be till eternity.

What WikiLeaks is doing is that it is bringing out the minus points at an exponential rate. And you don’t need to be an Einstein to figure out the consequences of such an outrage.
