What do you feel can be done to stop the spread of the HIV epidemic in India?
Over 40 million people across the world are HIV infected. The World Health Organisation says that India has one of the highest levels of HIV in Asia, with an estimated 5 million people living with the disease/infection in India. 30% of those infected are in the age group 15 - 29, and over 90% of the total infections in India are sexually transmitted.
Is sex education in schools the best way to inform young people about how to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections?
If so, what age should it be introduced? Will parents and elders frown upon this? Are there any wider issues involved that you can think of?
Share your views and concerns with us and with other young people.

Sex education not only at school level but also at grass root levels.

Like putting up aids awareness banners in red light area.

Making available free condoms in colleges.

Spreading awareness in slum areas, especially the ones like "dharavi"

----------------swami ramdev says ` dont pollute scool childeren 's mind from sex education --- teach them yoog ' that will make them more stronger in concept and physically -- what you say abt it--

Swami Ramdev may say if your break your bones, dont go to a doctor, do yoga.. in 20 yrs your fracture will automatically get healed.

That doesnt mean you shouldnt go visit a doctor ;)

arreee yaar we are nt debating on swami ramdev`s universal staments on doctors:big_grin: === sex education at such level of kids !! is int waired!!!:SugarwareZ-064:

What kartik said in his first post is right.... but at the same time, yoga is necessary. Meditation will help teach ppl get ease from sexual frustration, but it is not a fool-proof cure... Definitely what bond says is needed.

As for level, i think children are becoming matured... and hence it shud be made available for all children above 14-15

2006 was pivotal in the AIDS response. The number of people living with HIV rose to new highs, but infection rates declined in some countries. Young people's sexual behaviours showed positive trends proving that prevention works,

The "complete knowledge" about the disease can stop the disease. So to make people know about it awareness camp has to created about it especially on the rural areas.

Even screening of feature films or documentaries about the disease can be more helpful in teaching people on this disease.

hi there!!
as i belong to health field...i guess i can contribute to the topic...so here are my views!!!

1st lets clarify that the most reliable data of NFHS -3 ( national family health survey has given a report that all the hiv infection figures are manipulative as the ground reality is n't that huge!!!
we can rely on this data simply fr 2 reasons: it is based on blood sample collcetion.... NFHS (govt.) is taken as a benchmark in survey....
even if we trust this 5.5 million then in 1.6 billion population...its nt really that much concerning!! there are many other diseases which are taking huge tolls on death but nobody puts money in them becauz they can be cured( thats the reality!!!)
all these agencies worldwide have made such a hullaboo fr only 1 reason: it is another way to encash money for development projects as no vaccine is going to be discovered fr next 20 yrs....

now the controlling part: as said by smone earlier awareness is gud idea...but dear let me tell you there is difference between awareness & practice( of safe methods)thats make all the difference..

also one thing which am still nt convinced about is that in government intervention to tackle this problem they have majorly focussed on " truck drivers & CSW( commercial sex workers)" specially fr sex wrkers...i really ponder do they not do safe practice OR they are forced not to do that by their clients many invloving young brats from good families!!!also no other social class is under scrutiny.. if we see from a rational view ...all those persons(*inc businness class & rich) who are frequent fliers & live outside their home for loong time are all at high risks!!!nthing to offend but in reality they are!!!

my suggestions:

1st: remove AIDS FROM HIV... i mean "DN'T LINK THE TWO WORDS!!" it takes around 10 yrs to get aids from hiv...also stigmatizing hiv itself makes people run away from reality!!
HIV is simply a virus that affects your body immune system & the person contacting it can still live for years with some care!!!

2nd: link HIV testing with better life style...its just another check up like your routine ones!!! make people go for it without any fear!!! mark a trend with known celebrities going for it!! & PLEASE FOR GOD SAKE DN'T SHOW THE SMALL KIDS WITH AIDS FOR SYMPATHY...they really dn't need that all they need is empathy...make them work for good rather than feeling pity on themselves!! they can have a good future!!!

3rd:aware people about govt run facilities( by the way how many of us really know that there are VCTC centres( voluntary counselling & training centres which do the HIV testing at minimal cost!!!y7ess they are very much there!!) as they are set for us ,....we shud make them work...NACO has created many.they also do free condoms distribution at many places most of which goes waste primarily due to our negligence(* thats a big story in itself!!)..

4th: sex education is a dual weapon , it can backfire also!! by 12th today every student knows about sexual activities ..but what they need to now is to take it from scientific view point & try to learn how our body works to combat all such reactions...how we can prevent ourself from disease & how to maintain it well!! this can protect many .... so i wouls RATHER FORCE ON STRENGTHENING PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH basic REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM STUDY INCORPORATED IN IT..."

4th : awareness... instead of spending so much money if all we can do is stop treating sex as taboo...talking about it openly with relevant person...saying HIV/AIDS 10 times a day to diferent people.( giving all info!!)..we can really eradicate this disease in next 50 yrs ( am nt saying...this is said by a great guru in science!!!)
the idea is a famous marketing concept "WORD OF MOUTH"make people ask for it...thats called social marketing where you dn't impose your product , you make people so much aware that they them selves ask for it!!!

there si already an INDO-US corporate fund for hiv/aids so no need to wrry about money its the right managemnet thats required!!!

i guess its a bit too loong...but i really do feel these solutions can work!!!

Well sex education is not just about teaching how the reproductive organs work. Sex education also involves about the harmful effects and the diseases attached to it. Hence it is absolutely necessary that the teacher be highly qualified and very cautious while imparting it to the students.

Another thing is that there is lot of hype and confusion. Mails and forwards get spread like how aids virus will spread if u accidently sit on a needle on a chair. Such mails are hoax because the aids virus can survive only in blood stream and dies in fractions of seconds when exposed to air.

Hence, it is absolutely necessary to know and spread the correct information.

p.s. Nice article Anu

hey gaurav...welcome !!!:))
now coming back to the topic...i did mention

that itself means watever you are saying!!!
i tried calling it sex education as linking it with sex itself gives a wrong notation in people mind, & thats really hard & loong term change that we can do!!!
so just change the package" name it physical education" & impart the same knowledge!!! tahts wat i meant!! i hope now its clear!!!

second about rumours!!they are always there!1 be it any thing! we really can't stop them!!& bleive me in many cases they help also!! people are rational so they try to find out realities! ofcourse we should try to minimise them but again"dn't put hard brains on them, instead there are posters in every govt. hospitals taht show the basic modes of transmission"

by unsafe sex, by reused infected needles , by infected blood transfusion, infected mother to child transmission( pregnancy,CAN BE AVOIDED).....

these are the only ways...some also suspect taht infected mother's breast milk also transmits the virus but no studies to support it yet!!!
THESE ARE ONLY & ONLY METHODS OF HIV INFECTION!! REST ALL OTHER THINGS ARE CRAP!!!
EVEN IF MALE SEMEN( THE FLUID CONTAINING SPERMS KEPT OUTSIDE FOR 2 MIN, THE VIRUS DIES AWAY!!!)

thats all we need to know!!!

Good points Anu...

The main problem, as u said, is linking physical education to the word 'sex' and hence taking a wrong notion that it is taboo...

What u have highlighted is pretty nice, since people get confused with the rumors spread through the internet and hence, people take all sorts of unnecessary measures too.

It is true that with the high increase of internet and adult entertainment industry, people come to know about sexual activities, at a very early and hence it is very necessary to start 'physical education' (which should be the correct term to be used to avoid confusion) at an early age.

All of u might be knowing that chapters related to human reproduction is introduced in 8th or 9th std. itself and hence i feel that is the correct time to keep an additional (and compulsory) class for physical education too.

Let's see how it can be done...

1) The most important thing is the permission of the parents on such sensitive issues and hence, the school principle/head master should talk to the parents and should also make them talk to the concerned teacher. The parents can feel at ease that their child is in good hands.

2) Parents should talk to their children regarding such sensitive issues. I know many will feel hesitant, at first, however, the same should be handled by the teacher also, viz. special session should be held, BY THE SAME TEACHER, to help them discuss it with their wards.

3) The person handling physical education classes should be properly chosen. It is very important since, the way in which teachings have to be imparted is extremely important.

It is true that even a 10th std students knows the sexual activities very well, but as it is, the major source of each one of them is pornography, dirty magazines and incomplete knowledge from friends. Hence, the need of the hour is to take action as and well, the subjects are taught.

The subject is more difficult to take for girl students and hence a matured, well experienced lady teacher should handle it, so that there is no embarrassment for the girl child.

The focus should be on what sexual activity means, the preventions, the diseases related to it, etc. When a proper understanding and a free environment to interact with the teachers would be available, the innocent minds will be aware of what's best for them.

Again, camps should be organised and a proper awareness programme should be conducted in the rural areas as well, where the hesitation and consequently the ignorance is very high.

Apart from these, considering the other factors, a proper blood test should be conducted in a reputed hospital to ensure that one is free of AIDS. The doctors should ensure that they spend time with the patients explaining them what is the correct nature of the disease. Some people freak out by the name of AIDS and consider an AIDS-affected person as an untouchable (eg. as shown in the movie, 'My Brother Nikhil')

Hence, awareness camps should be held across the cities, and advertisements shown in television, to remove the doubts of the people.

We know that AIDS has no cure, yet medicines are available to help a person lead a comfortable life. Yet the most distressing thing is the condemnation of the person of the society and hence filling the patient with rage and anguish. Special counsellors should be made available to them so that such people can be helped.

I think Internet, television and newspapers are a very useful means of spreading this awareness.

Please let me know, if i have missed any point in the discussion.

hey gaurav
you have summed it up quite well...
but my only concern is taht at one end people are not aware of it, on other , people are over aware hence misusing the information...may sound strange but many HIV infected do nt disclose their identity & try every effort to make other person infected....
also am quite skeptical whether class room teaching is a solution as 12th class is nt appropriate fr such discussion..students take it all in fun!! we should try other effective ways to desiminate information...may be by forming peer groups, youth clubs ...in all it should be a community intervention rather than additional burden on teachers...
take care

What is over aware ??

Code:
may sound strange but many HIV infected do nt disclose their identity & try every effort to make other person infected....

This happens mainly because of the extreme discrimination they have to face. They are treated like insects. The solution can be only found by motivating others and trying to minimize this discrimination. When the affected people, find humane behaviour, their anger will also reduce.

No, i will disagree to that. Some people might be taking it that way, but once it is implemented strictly and a mature and cofident, well-experienced teacher is used, a strict study can follow. Besides, i said earlier that it is better to have it from 8th-9th std. onwards.

we should try other effective ways to desiminate information...may be by forming peer groups, youth clubs ...in all it should be a community intervention rather than additional burden on teachers...

Youth clubs and Peer groups are good only when things are taken seriously, otherwise they too can become unethical entertainment centres. I don't think it will be an additional burden.... i never said to take the help of subject teachers for that. Additional staff should be recruited for the special purpose!!!

Hey! What i feel is there should be more of awareness programmes thatshould take place at various levels. Circulars should be issued to all the Govt & Non Govt offices. there should be project and presentation regarding the HIV and its effects and causes to all schools and colleges. And the presentation should b for Slum areas, Red light areas, Rural areas etc.
Other important thing is that every hotel room should have atleast one wall posters stating message abt HIV bcaus now a days usually people visit these small hotles and cottages. more ad more college going guys and gurls also r involved in this. there for entry to young people should b through their ID cards.
Messages, commercial ADs on daily use products can also help like Milk bottles, containers, tea bags, biscuits etc. Village level education should b provided every month.
and last but not the least, there should b compulsory Sex education in school as well as college and higher level. i dont feel that there is someharm if children at young age come to know abt this deadly disease. infact childrens fundas gets cleard which parent cannot or couldnot explain. if these fundas r not clear then thay go for resources which r more harmfull for them.

Awraeness of the causes & the knowledge of symptoms and
more importantly effects [ physical & monetary ] is
very important.

Sex education is required from the earliest possible age.

First of all...creating awareness. The girls should be given more education and empowerment. They should put their foot down when the guy asks to have sex without condoms. Also the guys who are steady in a relationship should be more careful. However AIDS are more prominent,as of now, amongst the sex workers, thus they should be given free condoms and safety rules. Lot of work also needs to done in disposing needles from govt hospitals safely and not to forget the drug addicts..who also share needles..
