We 'got' or we 'won' independence?

every year the Americans celebrate 4th august as their independence day.it's when they remember how they won independence by a bitter struggle between the colony and colonialism.even ours was a bitter struggle for over 150 years.it was when Britain was completely shackled by impact of world war2 started by Hitler that they were forced to 'grant' us independence.did we really WON freedom?

I think its a conflict of words!!! But otherwise, the Britishers got pissed off and literally afraid after seeing mass uprisings as well as Unity among Indians during 1947, so in this case, we 'won' independence!
