MANAGING WATER POLLUTION

Salt and freshwater relationship
Distribution of water
} Ocean
Water: The vast majority of water on the planet is the salt water in the oceans and seas. Surface Water: This is the fresh water in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and similar bodies of water. The majority of the planet's liquid freshwater is stored in underground aquifers. Water that enters an aquifer remains there for an average of 1,400 years!

WATER POLLUTION
} Water
pollution is the contamination of water bodies. pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives (in) it.

Where do Water pollutants come from?
} Point
Sources ² A single definable source of the pollution, e.g. a factory, a sewage plant, etc. Point-source pollution is usually monitored and regulated. sources ² No one single source, but a wide range of sources, e.g. runoff from urban areas, or farmland. Non-point sources are much more difficult to monitor and control.

Sources of Water pollution
Point and Nonpoint Sources
Water pollutants
} Industrial } Mining
Effluents
This waste water may contain acids, alkalis, salts, poisons, oils and in some cases harmful bacteria.
and Agricultural Wastes pesticides, fertilizers and
Mines, especially gold and coal mines, are responsible for large quantities of acid water.
} Agricultural
herbicides may wash into rivers and stagnant
water bodies.
} Sewage
Disposal and Domestic Wastes
Sewage as well as domestic and farm wastes were often allowed to pollute rivers and dams.
Other water quality pollutants
} warm
water from cooling towers (thermal pollution) debris
} floating
} garbage } foam
These physical pollutants interfere mainly with the usability and/or aesthetic appeal of the water. In certain cases, thermal pollution can kill fish.
Water Pollution: Now
Most developed countries have reduced point source pollution, but toxic chemicals and pollution from non-point sources are still problems. Stream pollution in most developing countries is a serious and growing problem. Half of the world·s 500 major rivers are heavily polluted, and most of them run through developing countries where waste treatment is minimal or nonexistent. For example: Religious beliefs, cultural traditions, poverty, little economic development, and a large population interact to cause severe pollution of the Ganges River in India.
EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTON
food chain is damaged. } Diseases can spread via polluted water. } Acid rain. } Pollutants in the water will alter the overall chemistry of water. } Marine food sources are contaminated. } Altered water temperatures can kill marine life.

Remedial measures
} }
Never dump anything into city street drains. Check your vehicle for any leaks that could pollute waterways when flushed down city drains. Don't let water run while you are washing or brushing your teeth Replace taps with water-saving models. Don't dump unwanted prescriptions down the toilet or the drain.
