According to MMRDA Chief Engineer SR Nandargikar, “We had initially planned to have a bifurcation of the flyover, which would have carried traffic on the Service Road in the northern and as well as the southern direction of the Western Express Highway. However, the plan was modified as the south-bound arm of the flyover came into the funnel of the runway of the Chattrapati Shivaji Domestic Airport.”
Instead, the MMRDA has decided to have an under-way, which passes below the Western Express Highway. “The vehicles that are heading towards South Mumbai come through the flyover that will culminate in the Domestic Airport Junction and take the under-pass route which would lead them to the south direction lanes on the Western Express Highway,” Nandargikar added.
Pedestrians can use the under-pass as well. He further added that the cost of the flyover is estimated to be Rs 28 crore. The 700 meter-long flyover would have two lanes. “Because of the condition of the road at Milan Subway, we may restrict the width of flyover to three lanes, which can be used during peak hours either way,” said Nandargikar.
The flyover has been planned due to excessive flooding of Milan Subway, which completely halts the movement of vehicles in east-west direction. The plan for the flyover had been prepared long time ago, but the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had raised some objections. The No-objection from AAI was received January 2006, after which the MMRDA agreed to make modifications in the original plan.
