Festivals are important in Indian culture. Festivals were always celebrated so that all Indians could come together. It showed that India is a place of various culture and diversity and still people are one. They are called as Indians. It is said from August( the month of Shravan) all the festivals start coming. It starts with Ganesh chaturthi, ID, Dassera, Diwali, Christmas etc.
I visited a place where navrartri was going on. There was a big crowd. All people were enjoying themselves. There was one big circle except 4 ladies were dancing in between. I didn’t understand why? I was still wondering then suddenly the music was switched off. There was an announcement requesting the 4 ladies please there is goddess durga who is there in the mandap can you join the big circle. By dancing separately you might be insulting the goddess. The ladies felt insulted they said that, “The spirituality comes from heart and not by dancing in one circle or together.” Again they were requested still they didn’t listen. The organizers were fed up they again requested that if they dance in a group we are teaching our kids wrong values of divide and again if they dance in a group the music will be switched off. Seeing this suddenly two groups were formed and the place where a goddess was sitting that ground was turned into a battlefield. The two groups were against each other in front of the goddess for whose worship they had come together. I was standing still wondering what would happen next. But things settled down as elders came in between and things were normalized.
But my question is they all were educated Indians, didn’t they understand in the first attempt why do we celebrate these festivals? By dancing differently what lesson will kids get? We at one side talk about Unity in Diversity and our kids are seeing a totally different picture. Won’t they feel that we are taught something different but our parents are following something else? We have adopted a western style of living, we have taken India to great heights, we have some great names in corporate world, we are learning management principles but can someone tell me what about our culture? Our culture never taught us to be discrimination, it always told us Unity is Strength. I really want all Indians saying that, “I know that my unity with all people cannot be destroyed by national boundaries and government orders.” [/i][/b]Will we Indians rise one day saying this statement?
