Factors influencing perception
The factors that contribute to perceptual differences are:
Stages of the perceptual process

•Organisation
•Interpretation •Retrieval •Response

Impression Formation: a process by which information about others is grouped into categories and converted into more or less enduring cognitions or thoughts about them. Traits describe the behaviour of people and are the most common category used. We have our own theories about how different traits go together – Implicit Personality Theory.
Errors in Impression Formation
1. Primacy effect 2. Halo and horns effect 3. Similar-to-me effect
4. Stereotyping
5. Self-fulfilling Prophecy
(Pygmalion and Golem effect)
2. Attribution
Attribution: The ways in which people come to understand the causes of their own and others’ behaviours. Possible causes for behaviour:
? internal
? external
Kelley’s Attribution Theory
Attribution Errors
