Ujjain prof's body parts tampered with

There was a new twist in the Ujjain college professor death case on Tuesday when a government medical college here refused to accept the heart of Prof H S Sabharwal for patholigical tests. Prof H S Sabharwal had died during violence in college union polls in Ujjain on August 26. Prof Sabharwal's viscera and heart were sent to for medical examination to the medical college with a covering letter written by the Ujjain district police. But instead of reaching Indore, the samples reached Mahatma Gandhi Medico Legal Institute in Bhopal, where it was opened, resealed and redirected to the medical college.

The medical college then refused to accept the samples, saying that the viscera and heart have been damaged. Prof Sabharwal's ribs were fractured during the fracas and lungs and heart were damaged in the incident.

The medical college said legal norms were not followed by police in this regard. Refusing to accept the 'article' (heart) as norms were not followed, the pathology department of the medical college asked the police to follow 'all legal guidelines before bringing it back' for examination.

"Since the article was not properly sealed in a container and also the labels and papers accompanying it were incomplete, we refused to accept it and directed the concerned officials to follow all legal guidelines before bringing the article back for examination," hospital sources said.

The article was brought to the department by Ujjain police for examination on Tuesday. The pathological report would play a crucial role in ascertaining whether the professor died of heart attack or was beaten to death by the unruly students.

The death of Prof Sabharwal has snowballed into a major controversy as police and the CID probing it have not yet reached any final conclusion on the matter.
