Tsunami and earthquakes could not deter Prof. Shoji Shiba to keep his commitment to the PGPEX-VLM students at IIMC.
IIM Calcutta Campus, Kolkata, April 3, 2011:
Post Graduate Program for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) will commence 5th Academic Session (2011-12) from 3rd April 2011 at IIMC under Chairmanship of Prof. Ashis K Chatterjee. 38 successful First class Graduate Engineers with more than 5 years work experience in manufacturing industries have been selected to join the program in the 5th batch. Success stories and successful placements of the previous four batch students lead to an exclusive brand positioning of the program in Indian manufacturing companies and Japanese manufacturing companies in India.
Prof. Shoji Shiba, Deming Prize Winner, Ex- Prof. of MIT, USA and Chief Adviser, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for VLFM Program in India is all set to start his Break Through Management (BTM) and Five Step Discovery Process (FSDP) Sessions for PGPEX-VLM 5th batch students at IIM Calcutta from 4th April to 12th April 2011. BTM and FSDP courses are combination of classroom & workshop sessions, and factory visits, an unique and attractive feature of the program. Prof. Shiba has been taking these sessions from 1st batch (2007-08) onwards.
His commitment for the students has always been a lesson to learn. He was personally instrumental in organizing visit of 4th batch students from 27th February to 9th March 2011 to world famous factories like, Motomachi Plant of Toyota Motors in Nagoya & Toyoda, Aichi prefecture, Mitsui Chemicals Inc.(MCI), Ichihara works and Mobara Plant Operation Technology Training Centre, HITACHI Plant, Hitachi, “Space Dome" Exhibition Hall of JAXA/Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in Tsukuba city and Shinsei Bank, Meguro Production Center. He accompanied the students during the visits, albeit, he is 80 years old. The students have been fortunate to reach back IIMC on 10th March 2011.
Prof. Shoji Shiba got stranded in Tokyo Station when the devastating earthquake broke out at about 14-45 hours on 11th March 2011 followed by Tsunami waves along the coast line of Japan. He spent the whole day and night in Tokyo Station along with thousands of people and could reach home after 24 hours to find his wife helplessly waiting for him in a shattered house with glasses broken, all equipments broken and scattered, books and paintings lying on the floor, and no water supply. The elderly couple remembered the days of the Second World War, nearly 67 years ago. The plight and agony for him got multiplied by the nuclear radiation threat, and on personal level, aggravating of health condition of his ailing 100 year old mother in the hospital.
The Professor proved his mettle to the world around him with the distinctive, unparallel Japanese characteristics of calmness, maintenance of order and discipline in the hour of crisis and dedication to community service sacrificing personal agenda. This driving force leads him to start his session from 4th April 2011 for the New batch of 38 students at IIM Calcutta leaving behind his personal loss and tragedy. Indeed an example of extreme sense of commitment for the students – a lesson needs to be learnt by many.
