ABSTRACT
This is our project on Tour Management. To understand the concept better, we had been to an adventurous college trip. We have analysed and observe the trip as an organiser point of view. We had a trip to Shimoga which is in Karnataka state. The place promotes the Eco-tourism as well as adventure tour which is run by a NGO. Here I will explain the concept of Eco- tourism, the impact of Eco- tourism, etc. I will also be explaining about the concept of Tour Management. TOUR MANAGER: Most tour managers possess the skills to effectively manage and communicate with tour participants. Also, tour managers should be people who can work well under pressure. He should be someone who is punctual, someone who prepares for the unexpected and someone who have a lot of contacts with promoters, venues and just people in general. Most people hiring tour managers would like someone who is an experienced tour manager with strong interpersonal and team leadership skills. Organization, creativity and passion are the qualities a tour manager should possess as well as the ability to successfully solve problems independently. Also, a tour manager should have exquisite verbal and written communication skills. ECO TOURISM: Eco-tourism is more than a catch phrase for nature loving travel and recreation. Eco-tourism is consecrated for preserving and sustaining the diversity of the world's natural and cultural environments Eco-tourism also endeavours to encourage and support the diversity of local economies for which the tourism-related income is important. Eco-tourism is considered the fastest growing market in the tourism industry, according to the World Tourism Organization with an annual growth rate of 5% worldwide and representing 6% of the world gross domestic product, 11.4% of all consumer spending - not a market to be taken lightly.

PRE- TOUR
Discussion about other destinations: Initially we were planning for other places for college trip. We contacted many travel agencies. One of the travel agencies came up with an idea of Eco and Adventure Tour. Everyone had positive response for this particular trip. Finalisation of the tour: Finally we opted for the Eco Tourism product. Mr. Vishnu was the tour organiser. He had many visits to the academy and explained each and every thing to the students. Later on we finalised the cost of the tour 3,100 /- per person. Initial issues: Many students were reluctant to come for the trip. Some had financial problem, some didn’t have any idea about the tour, no coordination between batches. At last the tour was made compulsory for everyone. Collection of payments: Tour costs were collected before the tour. Since many people had financial problem, we gave them the option of instalments. Finally everything was done and all were waiting for the trip. Formation of groups: Since our batch was doing Tour Management program, we were divided into three teams. Group A, group B and group C. Our group was team A, and we were responsible for day 1 and 4. Group wise we instructed the other batches and prepared them for the forthcoming trip.
DAY 1 ? Arrived at Chennai Central Railway Station - to board Bangalore Express at 12:30hrs ? Train Departed at 13:35 hrs. ? We arrived Bangalore City at 20:05hrs. ? We boarded our bus to Shimoga at 21:40hrs. ? At 22:30 we had stopover for our Dinner enrouting to Tumkur at Highway Dhaba. ? We proceeded to Shimoga camp site at 23:30hrs. ? At 00:40hrs we had stopped for Café Coffee Day. ? Then at 1:40hrs we proceeded to Camp without stopover.
ISSUES ? No Proper Time Management- Before departure we asked everyone to reach on time. But people were coming very late. ? Lot of confusions- everyone had lot of doubts before departing for the tour. Itinerary was not clear for many people. ? Dinner was unsatisfactory- no one liked the food at Dhaba because it was unhygienic and the service was poor. The Hotel Bell was cancelled since there was no vacancy. SOLUTIONS ? As a tour manager I would make a time schedule and I will make sure that everyone arrives at exact time. ? Being a Tour Manager, I will always check that there is no confusion. The doubts will be clarified beforehand. ? I will make sure that good hotel or restaurant is booked beforehand.
DAY 2 ? Arrived the camp site by 08:45hrs. ? We got refreshed and had our breakfast at Camp. ? At 10:10hrs Mr. Kumar the Director of the Organization briefed about Eco Tourism and how to get close to nature. Explore the nature and wild life without harming them. ? We were instructed by Mr. Ram about the water sports activity, the precautions and warm-up exercises. ? Then we proceeded to lake at 11:00hrs. ? We started experiencing the Adventurous water sports by 11:15hrs. ? We also enjoyed kayaking, Canoeing etc. ? We got refreshed after water sports and had our lunch by 15:00hrs. VISIT TO JOG FALLS ? We planned to depart for the Jog Falls at 16:00 hrs. But we started by 16:30hrs. ? At 17:30hrs we reached Jog falls and explored the spectacular view of Jog Falls, which is Asia’s largest waterfalls. ? We planned to depart the Jog falls by 18:00hrs. ? But we departed by 18:45hrs. AT MUPPANEY CAMP SITE ? We arrived camp site at 19:30hrs. ? We had night trek to camp site and reached by 20:00hrs. ? Dinner was provided by 20:45hrs. ? Then we proceeded to Camp fire by 21:30hrs.
? There we had opportunity to know about Illuminating Tree wood which was found and demonstrated by Mr. Ram. ? Camp fire gave us memorable moment for sharing our experience and we had fun with our new friends. ? At 22:45 hrs we accommodated into spacious tent prepared by Organizer’s team.
ISSUES ? The Basic facilities made people upset. Basically the rest rooms and food. ? Group B was failed to keep time schedule. ? The end result was delay in reaching camp site and few clients found difficulty in walking at night.
SOLUTIONS ? Since it was an Eco trip, I would have told people that the infrastructure would be minimal. Food is always normal and simple in such trips. I would have informed them about the facilities initially. ? Since there was lack of time management we reached the camp very late. I would have instructed the people to be punctual. ? Even though coordination was needed in this case, but the night trek was amazing.
DAY 3 ? We woke up at 06.30 hrs, had breakfast at 08.oo hrs ? Instruction was given before the trek started. ? 08.30 hrs we left for trekking ? We reached the trekking point at 11.00 hrs ? We were divided into 3 groups ? 11.30 – 19.30 hrs trekking ? In between we had lunch at 16.00 hrs ? 19.35 hrs we came back, dinner at 20.45 hrs ? 23.00 hrs departed again for Bangalore City
ISSUES ? Bus stopped at middle, we had to walk to reach the trek point ? Leech bite- Everyone got attacked from leeches. ? Long trekking- Some people were very slow to walk, since they were very tired. The time was simply getting wasted. ? People were shouting and yelling- it was disturbing the surroundings. ? People disposed chocolate wrappers and bottles ? No proper time schedule, we had lunch at 16.00 hrs ? We were getting late for departure, we didn’t have enough time
SOLUTIONS ? The road should be constructed better. So that vehicle should reach the trek point.
? Leech bite- precautions was already given, everyone had a packet of salt to stay away from leech bite. ? I would have instructed to do some exercise before going for the trekking. We advice people to carry water bottle with them. ? Everyone should remain silent while entering the forest. It may disturb the animals and local surroundings. ? People disposed chocolate wrappers and bottles. We instructed them to carry poly bags so that they don’t spoil the nature. I would like to give special thanks to Ms.Pratima who always took care of everyone. She has also contributed to clean the place as clean as possible. ? No proper time schedule. Now this is the common problem we have faced every day. We had lunch very late. People were starving during trekking. We advice people to carry chocolates with them as it gives energy to walk for a long time. We were supporting each other to walk fast and comfortably. ? As a Tour Manager I would see that in our presence the natural beauty should not get spoilt. I would also request people to plant a tree sampling frequently in their place. We have seen lot of plant samplings during trekking, it shows that the plantation is still going on which makes the place more green and clean.
DAY 4 ? Bangalore at 08.15 hrs ? Missed the train, booked one bus from Sangita travels ? After breakfast, at 10.15 hrs we departed. ? 13.00 hrs lunch at Krishna Inn and HP Dhaba, Hossur ? Reached Chennai central at 19.30 hrs
ISSUES ? We reached Bangalore at 08.15 hrs and missed the 6.30 train. ? Missed the train, booked one bus from Sangita travels. We had to pay extra money. ? Reached Chennai central at 19.30 hrs that was very late for us.
SOLUTIONS ? Since we were late the previous night, we missed the morning train. As an organizer I would not have chosen the early morning train. After an overnight journey, boarding train early morning was not possible. ? We had one more option for next train but in general compartment. But we chose for bus travel as it was more convenient than train. Being an organizer, we should have contacts with other parties like travel agencies, so that we can arrange everything on time. ? We reached Chennai very late and everyone was tired. We had lost the full day by travelling.
POST TOUR
? Asked feedback from all the staffs and students. We got positive response from everyone. Everyone liked the trip and enjoyed it. ? Due payments have been collected so far. ? After the trip we could see a total change. People have become more interactive and friendly. ? We have learnt about Eco Tourism and subject related concepts. We have gained more knowledge. ? Students have become more enthusiastic and planning for next trip ? Photo copies of ID cards were collected from everyone for reimbursement of train cancellation charge. ? Interviews have been taken post tour for more suggestions and comments.
SURVEY INTERVIEW
These are the following comments and suggestions shared by all students and staff members: ? Detailed explanation was expected ? Time management, precautions were below average ? Pre planning preparations needed ? Responsibility was supposed to be taken up with commitments ? Good chance to mingle with all batches ? Students and staffs were really supportive ? More knowledge about Eco Tourism
? Itinerary should be fixed ? Time management and cooperation needed ? Proper dress code for trekking ? Information was not given properly ? Trip was enjoyable ? Good experience with seniors ? Accommodation was not comfortable ? People should be punctual ? Understanding the requirements of each individual is must for any organizers ? Group A & B got more appreciation for the effortless work and coordination.

CONCLUSION
We have gained more knowledge and got chance to go closer to nature. Adventurous trip is one of the parts of Eco Tourism, we are thrilled and feeling relaxed now. As far as Tour Management programme is concerned, we have learnt about the job profile of the same, and the qualities to become a Tour Manager. We could see changes in everyone’s thought and perspective. This trip brought many opportunities and we are in a position to understand our subject better.
ECO TOURISM
Through this trip, we are able to understand the real concept of Eco Tourism. We have understood why to conserve the nature. Eco Tourism gives opportunity to save the nature as much as possible. Ecotourism is a form of tourism visiting fragile, pristine, and usually protected areas, intended as a low impact and often small scale alternative to standard commercial tourism. Its purpose may be to educate the traveler, to provide funds for ecological conservation, to directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities.
TOUR MANAGER PROGRAMME
To be a good tour manager, one must be calm and be able to juggle the many different tasks that the job entails. Tour manager is responsible for making sure the show goes on from venue to venue without running into any problems. Working as a tour manager can also be a fun and rewarding job due to the fact that we get to travel and see the world.
