KOCHI: Last weekend, the backwaters of Kerala witnessed a battle of wits and strength as 35 corporates fought to outdo each other in a closely–fought finish that saw Times of India bag the second position at the Microsoft Corporate Challenge 2006. While Standard Chartered emerged the winner, JM Morgan Stanley came third in a test of endurance, fitness and effective strategy.

The Times Of India’s sister concern Indiatimes, ranked 12 th, in the 2-day event that tested each team in 5 stages. Running, cycling, light engineering, cracking codes, trekking through the wild, rowing across the backwaters—participants were exposed to a wide range of activities that tested their physical and mental threshold limit. Last year, TOI had ranked 3 rd, .

“Although many of the participant members were meeting each other for the first time, it was amazing to see how they came together as a team in an extremely difficult competition that pushed each member to the extreme, “Prem Bhatia, Managing Director, Sports Media Limited, said.

For executives, the F.A.C.T. (Fertilizers And Chemicals Travancore) campus, away from boardrooms and balance sheets, provided the perfect impetus for rediscovering the values of team work and effective strategy.

Buoyed by the event’s success Venkat Vardhan, Managing Director, DNA Networks, plans to “look at a foreign location next year.”

Other companies who tried to win this battle of wits and strength included ICICI, Barclays Bank, the Indian Navy, Pepsi Foods, RMZ, Infosys, Microsoft, GE Money, Thomson International, Unilever, Ashok Leyland, Motorola, JWT, Hutch, Reliance Capital, Worldspace, Grey Worldwide and McDowells.
