Three more freak incidents of Nokia cell phones exploding in Kolkata have given rise to a question: Are the BL 5C batteries to blame yet again or is there a bigger picture?
This is the third reported incident of a mobile phone blast in the past two weeks. The daughter in law of the Saha household escaped serious injuries. The household is still wary of the phones.
Victim’s mother-in-law Aarti Saha says, “We are so afraid we are still living with those mobiles any day another accident can happen but no one is coming forward for help.”
In another incident, the explosion occurred inside a telecom store. This time, the phone belonged to the store owner Ajit Prasad.
Shop owner Ajit Prasad says, “When I opened the flap of the mobile it exploded i bought it five years back.”
And the battery was BL 5C. Now here's the big question - is legal action possible?
The Saha family's phone had a to BL 3D model. And the Asansol store owner's phone was two years old; hence his BL 5C battery was not among those that was recalled. So if the BL 5C is not uniquely faulty and neither is Nokia here's the bigger picture.
12 electronic companies issued product recalls. They include Hitachi, Sony, Dell, Panasonic and Lenovo. All the product recalls involved laptop or cell phone batteries.
The need of the hour therefore is standardisation of battery components towards which the companies must work.
