The Problem Pool Balls

You have 12 balls identical in size and appearance but 1 is an odd weight (could be either light or heavy).

You have a set of scales (balance) which will give 3 possible readings: Left = Right, Left > Right or Left < Right (ie Left and Right have equal weight, Left is Heavier, or Left is Lighter).

You have only 3 chances to weigh the balls in any combination using the scales.

Determine which ball is the odd one and if it's heavier or lighter than the rest. How do you do it?

First keep the 6 balls on each side of the scale.....

The side having heavier ball will be known.....

Then take those six balls and keep them equally on the scale i.e. 3balls on each side...

The again the side having heavier ball will be known.....

This time you have 3 balls....

So keep one ball on each side of the scale and one will be left outside....

If the heavy ball is on the scale... the scale will tilt towards it... If the scale balances then the ball left outside is heavy ball.....

First Weight: 6 Balls on each side -> Select the balls on heavier side
Second Weight: 3 balls from heavier side on each side -> select the 3 balls on heavier side
Third Weight: Take 2 balls from 3 balls & keep on balance; if both are having equal weight the third ball is odd one out else the one on heavier side is odd one out.
