The Language Juggernaut on Telecom products seems to have been picked up for roll out by major consumer telecom product manufacturers. Some of the major manufacturers and service providers seem to have finally woken to the potential and kick-started talks to offer the services in multiple local languages. They seem to have finally realized that to deepen the market, it is imperative that consumers are offered value added services in languages of their choice so that they can use the services just as other voice services. This is likely to kick start many projects to upgrade hardware and software at various levels in the telecom value chain.

The impact of languages is likely to be deeper than just on telecom products though they are certainly one where this would have tremendous impact. However, Direct to Home entertainment services are another area where user friendliness can be improved if the user interface are in the language of the users. Similarly, consumer electronics and computer/video games are other areas where penetration can go up manifold if services are offered in the languages of users/consumers who are mainly children and women.

As this juggernaut deepens and the tentacles spread out, the other industry segments likely to be impacted are the government services, financial services, legal services etc. which would be impacted in a major way. Currently users/consumers have limited options as they are at receiving end forced to scale up to the requirements of the service provider/producer. Since there is likely to be resistance to change, it will be incumbent upon the players in the industry to come up with innovations that are cherished by consumers including a way to push and develop market accordingly in these segments. This will create new leaders who offer improved customer satisfaction in the area. For Example: say the Government of Bihar can offer and arrange government and legal services in the language of the people as well as ensure that the cooperative and regional banks offer services to customers in their local language such account opening, operations, loan agreements, servicing and alerts to customers amongst other.

Later on as market starts to mature, entire advertising and promotion for various product and services are likely to be impacted including packaging and distribution since these will need to be redesigned as per customer preferences which may have changed due to choice offered in his language. Let’s watch the space…..
