Johnny was a young boy who lived in Australia. One day, his friends offered him a choice between a one dollar coin and a two dollar coin. In Australia, the one dollar coin is considerably larger than the two dollar coin. Johnny took the one dollar coin.
His friends giggled and laughed and reckoned Johnny very stupid because he did not yet know that the smaller coin was worth twice as much as the bigger coin. Whenever they wanted to demonstrate Johnny's stupidity they would repeat the exercise. Johnny never seemed to learn.
One day a bystander felt sorry for Johnny and beckoning him over, explained
that the smaller coin was actually worth twice as much as the larger coin.
Johnny listened politely, then he said; 'Yes, I do know that. But how many times would they have offered me the coins if I had taken the two dollar coin the first time?'
If you are a lateral thinker, another Johnny or Jenny perhaps, you can also collect a lot of coins, certainly in terms of varied experience, a broad knowledge base and a wider perspective.
Career in the conventional sense is about goal orientation, but once you have fixed yourself a goal or a purpose, the madness of reaching there creates barriers in learning. Like in the tale above, if you stop to think before you grab the two dollar coin, you can actually emerge richer. Therefore, do give your career decisions a well-rounded thought. To be truly happy, choose a career that is in sync with your personality, inner goals and dreams.
First, there is the problem of beginnings. Where do you start? Well, instead of going for a career that you have been conditioned to think as best for you, try and find out what you really want. Any impelling interest can become a career, so instead of treating a hobby as a part-time diversion, explore the possibility of it becoming a career, your career.
Have you ever stopped to wonder about that elusive, special quality certain people, who are masters in their field, have? I would say it is the level or degree of comfort that they have achieved with themselves within their fields. They have managed to identify what they have been gifted with and made their career and extension of who they are.
Shymalan (director of The Sixth Sense) for example, has a very strong sixth sense. He knew he'd marry his wife, after their first meeting. He knew which house he would buy as soon as he saw it, on the first day of house hunting. And he knew that The Sixth Sense would sell for over $2 million dollars and would star Bruce Willis. All this before he'd ever written the script. The script sold for $3 million and was green lit without a rewrite. Is it any surprise then that the movie was a roaring success and was nominated for the Oscars?
You too can be an achiever, if you love what you do. Be a performer who connects with the audience, a teacher who triggers revelations, a doctor who heals mind, body and spirit, a writer who is sensitive to the vibes of words, a chef who creatively concocts exotic dishes. Be the best that you can be.
So, dear lateral thinkers, get outta-the-mould (just to do away with the by now clichéd outta-the-box), put on your thinking caps and bring your own personal touch of magic to your career.
