“The environment is man’s first right. Without a safe environment, man cannot exist to claim others rights, be they political, social or economic.”- Dean Rusk.
Picture this scenario; see what the future has in store for us. Cities have begun to resemble labs; streets are choked with cars and veiled in a thick shield of smoke and smog. Wonder! What the creator had in mind when he created this unique home for the humanity. He probably believed that all human beings would cooperate with each other in sustaining the natural bounties for the common good. But the things did not work as per the master’s plan. Human being’s unending greed has led to rapid deforestation, pollution, extinction of wildlife species and desertification.
“Desertification is one of the world’s most alarming processes of environmental degradation”.
The UN had declared the year 2006 as the International Year for Deserts and Desertification (IYDD). Desertification is the degradation of fertile lands in the dry land regions of the world over a period of time due to human actions and climatic variations. In 1930, US turned into dust bowl as a result of drought and poor practices in farming in the Great Plains.
Desertification has potentially devastating consequences in terms of social, economic and ecological costs, the brunt of which will be borne by the generations to come. Every year desertification swallows over 12 million hectares of fertile land worldwide. Everyday about 33,000 people starve to death. The economic impact is horrendous, with a loss of more than $40 billion per year in agricultural goods. 1 billion out of 6 billion world population is affected by desertification.
Let us think together, hope and dream a new dawn of greenery and empower our children to work for it. To achieve our eternal goals of happiness and prosperity, we have to change our outlook to action than to be reactive.
No matter where you are in this world, if you have decided to do something deep from your heart you can do it. It is the thought that matters, not where you are or where the person is….
