Essay writing is a staple of a school's curriculum. Essays help students understand certain concepts better, explore new and foreign topics, and provide motivation for self learning and writing improvement.

But what defines a good essay?

Popular examples like the MLA essay format continue to provide a basis for the majority of English teachers to utilize in order to grade and standardize their papers. However, does an essay, written by a passionate student who fully understands his or her topic, that does not directly follow MLA be given a lower score than a mediocre article that does? Is an essay truly just a one way road, that requires a student to utilize a design not of their own making? Or is the format simply used for the sake of easier grading?

Essays, in my opinion, are written to prove a point. They're written in order to provide evidence and offer personal opinion on the thesis of choice. Essays are tools that help both writer and reader understand, comprehend, and explore a topic in creative and elaborate ways that are both informational, and vibrant in writing.

I believe what matters the most is that at the end of the day, the purpose behind writing the article by the author must be fulfilled. (*for eg: change in society). The audience should have an effect of the essay in the long run is what is the actual motive behind any essay... Other than this, what depends is the way your presenting yourself to your target audiences through this essay!!
