The 'Crib Politics' - and Political Leaders
By: Amit Bhushan Date: 15th Dec. 2014
The Political Leaders almost always manage to show their immaturity in public with commercial media and ever 'gullible patrakars' (now even the patrakars have started appreciating these articles in Management Paradise) ready to sell the histrionics as genuine grievances of people of a region or state.
This is even as any person of reasonable sound thinking can state with reasonable confidence that the people of India across different regions, caste, creed and religion have depicted clear signals of 'moving away' from such politics in the last generally elections as well as subsequent state elections. This may not have taken roots and clear identity amongst the rural areas however the impact is urban political setting & discussions is 'visible'.
The latest gimmick is from one 'political formulation' having somewhat better 'acceptability in the 'secular camp' making a deep dive to vociferously voice its 'demands' and in the process stall legislative business in the 'Temple of Democracy'. This may be a stray incident from a political party since a bit more mature set of leaders from the same camp are attempting to work their way on honing up 'development optics' front alongside their media advisors and partrakars friends. However, even the meager nature of such histrionics needs to be analyzed and presented for simpler and easier public consumption.
The political leaders who triumphed in the general elections resorted to a mix of development metrics alongside a decisively better implementation track record (compared to some other states) of the then 'central schemes' (of the then center government) including projection of its 'own achievements', verbal selection in campaign, image management and 'crib'. The 'crib' might have gotten a bit aboveboard on some occasions and this may be while supporting certain bills as well as while opposing some others (e.g. support for Land Acquisition Bills and opposition of FDI in Retail etc.) and this is reflected in contradictions in current governance set up. The track record comment will be challenged however such comment is based of Energy (Electricity and Gas) supply metrics, Canal Irrigation improvements, Agri-productivity growth (may be on account of technology, however readiness to absorb technology rather than remaining stubbornly opposed to it is a 'choice' exercised by 'leader' either actively or due to inactivity) as well as industrial investment absorption including resultant job creation. Thus political mix used to 'widen appeal' and win 'others' outside of core political ideology becomes clear. However, the present 'Crib' leaders seem to be fully relying upon the appeal of 'crib & blame' to rally 'masses' and to cover all fallacies under their forcefully appealing 'crib'.
The patrakar friends of such political leaders also seem convinced that the constituency of such leaders can be sold 'crib' even when such 'crib' lacks other masala stuff (that might have improved the 'taste' of such crib). The absence of big-bang project optics could have been made up by suitable metrics and governance improvement initiatives like online government, transparency etc. or depiction in Agri and allied agri activities. The power surplus state could have taken initiatives to curb T & D losses to improve power ecosystem in state and might have attempted to attract further investment or improve gas supply in the state etc. which could have resulted in some industrial growth activities. Similarly cultural and sports activities seem to have taken back seat with little development of marine activities like shipping, fishing etc. It is thus the inactivity on policy front being covered by verbosity on the 'lack of funds' and other social frontiers. The commercial news media as usual continues to perform is 'news delivery' business with or without apologies.
