The best things in life are unexpected - because there were no expectations

The best things in life are unexpected - because there were no expectations

My experience:

I am Akshit Jain pursuing my management from MILE-Management Institute for Leadership and Excellence, pune marketing as my specialization. I did my internship with Firstsource which is one of India's Leading BPO.

First day was an orientation day, wherein all summer interns were briefed about BPO. Before that day I used to think that only work at call center was that you receive or make calls to customers. I was wrong it is much more than calls it was altogether a different ball game. I understood the concept of customer service associate, Team leaders, Quality analyst and many things and that day I realized that my knowledge was nil about BPO.

There were some people whom we had to hire and their are main three sources of recruitment at Firstsource they are:

· RCC- Recruitment calling center

· TOM-TOM i.e. Employee Referral

· Agencies/ Consultancies

RCC - If any candidate comes for an interview and gives any references of their friends who are looking for job so people in recruitment call them and line them for interview and those candidates come under RCC.

TOM-TOM - They have given this name to employee referral. Any person who is working with firstsource, gives any references if that candidate comes that goes under TOM-TOM.

I thought my internship would be in an ac office wherein I would be applying my marketing concepts with my laptop and all jazzy stuff, I started imagining but on very first day my dreams got shattered.

Then finally shock was given that I had to go on street and source candidates talk to them, had to brief them about company and process which we were hiring for means a new channel of recruitment was about to come into an existence which would be taken care by Marketing guys. I got to know that my work would be sourcing candidates, it would sound strange that being a marketing student why I had to source candidates, so was I.

FOS- Feet on street was the channel name, sounds so amazing but trust me it was not. An entire new concept which was never tried and no one did it earlier. It was expected from us to do that which was a shock to us.

What we had to?

We had to go on streets, malls, hotels or station any place where foot fall was high. We had to approach people or rather we can say our prospect that is to be of specific age limit with good communication skills. Mere talking was not enough we had to convince them regarding that job, lining up them for interview.

Before my internship I was being informed that my internship would be based out in Patna. On my orientation in the morning it was being told I had to join after one week by the time orientation got over one more shock was given to me that I had to join next day only and location would be Mumbai. Always expect the unexpected that’s what my manager told to me whom I had to report, I said to myself - Welcome to corporate world.

My internship finally starts:

Mumbai's climate is full of humidity and just imagine doing FOS (feet on street) in that climate how difficult it was. I started my work and started approaching people. Imagine you are standing with your friends enjoying with them and a person come asks you that are you looking for any job?

How does it sound? People they didn’t use to say anything at that point of time but they used to laugh. Some of them used to reply in a nice way, some of them didn’t use to listen and some of them used to talk in a harsh way and tried to make fun. Initially I thought why I was doing all this? What benefit I would get out of all this?

Later on I realized after my MBA when I am going to be placed, I will get a job like this only where I have to interact with people will have to convince them and that is the reality. I realized the importance of it when days passed on.

Finally I started my work went on street and First place which I visited was railway station and I was feeling so weird and was feeling so shy that for initial few minutes I couldn’t talk to anyone. Somehow I gathered some courage and started talking to people and my first question Are you looking for a job? Reply was NO and it continued.

By the time when I was not having any I-card and visiting cards people used to ask where is you I-card or visiting card and my answer used to be I didn’t have it was in the process, so even if any of them was interested that person used to doubt that was I really associated with firstsource or not. There were no response from people even if they used to listen they never turned for interview in spite of doing regular follow-up with them.

Things went on I used to go on street everyday in hope that I might get any candidate who could come with me for interview and week 1 and 2 passed on and there were no offers from my side. From walk-ins game changed to that how many selects I had in a particular day and finally at the end how many of them who got selected had joined.

After few days there used to be meeting every day where my manager used to ask our commitment for the day and in evening how much we delivered. Target how dangerous this thing could be I understood. First two weeks my contribution was nil and it was high time where all other sources were delivering. We entered into 3rd week and if this time I had not delivered I had to pack my bag and had to leave.

"Hard work always pays” and finally offer was rolled out from my side after 20 days into that system their was a walk-in and luckily he got selected and then I never looked back.

In total 22 selects and to achieve these numbers even worked on Sundays, hardly on any Sunday I got leave.

For achieving those numbers I got some monetary benefits as well I earned incentive of 35,000 apart from my fixed stipend which means a lot and was a source of motivation as well I was amongst top most performer.

FOS became the second highest source as per contribution wise beating their internal sources.

The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.

Certificate of appreciation - By VP-HR FIRSTSOURCE Mr. Amar salvi

INNOVATION -

With hard work, smart work is also required and that is what expected from MBA students. One of the eligibility criteria for hiring was student should not be a regular student of any college, he should be a correspondent student which again was very difficult to find. Suddenly one day I saw a distance education center and it clicked in my mind that I might get some candidates from them if approached in a right way. I went there explained them about process and made them talent-scout of company. This thing helped me and walk-ins started increasing from this thing and got some selects as well. I was appreciated for the same.

Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.

LEARNINGS

· Importance of FOS for a marketing student.

· Knowledge about BPO industry.

· Handwork is always appreciated but at the end results are rewarded.

· Target vs. delivery - Importance of these two terms.

· Competition always increases your productivity.

· Importance of Teamwork

CONCLUSION

At the end when my internship got over I learnt a lot and will always cherish those 2 months in my life. I learnt that one should always go extra-mile to make presence felt in the organization. Whatever comes to your way accept rather than cribbing about it. Always expect the unexpected, in corporate culture you have to work more than what is expected from you. Only thing which can make a difference is hard work.

That was my first experience with corporate world expected something else turned out something else but accepted it and I am very happy I got such a nice internship. The journey continues - They liked my work so much that they have again called me for one more project.
