Text CVs are out, video resumes in

With leading job portals pushing them, the trend is set to grow fast

MUMBAI: Video resumes could well prove to be the next big wave, moving from paper, e-documents and URLs. And graduating from cassettes , CDs and DVDs that they have ridden so far, in the rare cases that they actually did, it is the internet these capsules have now moving to, increasingly.

The benefits of audio-visual resumes have never been lost on jobseekers, given that one can make an active presentation; the problem so far was the medium. But, with job portals accepting these capsules, they are now hitting the internet with a vengeance. Interestingly, such CVs can be found on blogs, too.

There are both good and bad sides to the trend - while on one hand it is believed to simplify the screening process, on the other hand, there is a risk of it making a mockery of the recruitment process.

In the US last year, a well-known financial services provider had to call for an internal investigation following the leak of a video resume of an aspiring investment banker, which hogged the internet and channels. Needless to say, privacy and confidentially of the jobseeker's information are significant concerns.

All the same, online job portal Monster India has already announced such a facility. "Text resume is one way of presenting yourself, but with video resume, you can do much more. This new facility can work as a preliminary screening tool," said Vikas Agarwal, vice-president - product & technology, Monster India.

Meanwhile, InfoEdge (India), which owns naukri.com, is considering a similar move. "We may be looking for such facility," Sanjeev Bikhchandani, CEO, InfoEdge (India) said. He, however, averred that text resumes were far from being obsolete since recruiters are keen to know a candidate's basic qualification and experience first.

Under the new facility, Monster India allows jobseekers to post video resumes of up to 2 minutes duration including a presentation of the resume and snippets of works. Those in creative fields thus stand a good chance of showcasing their skills through the possibility.

The video resumes can be uploaded on Monster India's website (www.monsterindia.com) just like the text resumes. They can be uploaded in multi-file format, including dot mov, dot wmb and dot avi. They can also be accessed through mobile sets like Nokia and Samsung.

The portal, though, is cautious. "All the video resumes that will be uploaded on the website will go through a procedure wherein its content and quality will be checked before uploading," said Agarwal, pointing to the novelty and simplicity of the facility.

The advent of YouTube, cheap video cameras and growing familiarity of the worker pool sure make the case for video resumes. And with
the total internet population in the country likely to touch 100 million by the current fiscal end (according to the Internet & Mobile Association of India), they could soon become a conspicuous trend.
