Advancement in science and technology has succeeded in dissolving borders and bringing the world closer. Yet, the world is fragmented owing to the growing intolerance and violence prevailing in the modern society. Each small act of violence has the potential to give rise to the catastrophic evil-TERRORISM.
From obscurity, terrorism now occupies the fore-front in the present day scenario. It has cast its shadow on every part of the world and has left indelible marks in the hearts of it’s victims. Terrorism breathes the spirit of discord and vengeance; it thrives on the forces of slaughter and destruction. It spreads an atmosphere of antagonism, stifling the growth of humanity and choking the ideals of universal love and brotherhood.
Terrorism has spread its ugly tentacles all across the world. It has prevailed in forcing the political and social machinery to come to a stand still. Even the superpowers like the USA are reeling under the curse of global terrorism. It is a monstrous obstacle in the path for development for a nation like India.
The most recent example of such a barbaric act of violence in our nation is the triple bomb blasts that occurred in Paharganj, Sarojini Nagar and Govindpuri in Delhi on 29th of October. The entire population was swept in shock at the brutal audacity of the terrorists to commit such magnitude of animosity and violence in the Capital City. Even as the heart breaking stories of the plight of the victims continue, we hear of a similar incidence of terror occurring in Faislabad, Pakistan.
These recurrent nightmares force us to delve deeper into the causes of terrorism. As we investigate, we arrive at the ironical conclusion that religion, which has since its inception stood for doctrines of love and compassion, is fast becoming a breeding ground of terrorism.
Religious fanatics have distorted the very soul of religion and made a mockery of it by preaching violence and hostility under it’s shade. Corrupt leaders and politicians also mobilize public opinion to settle their personal vendettas. Lack of spirituality and growing frustration also play a key role in the cultivation in the seeds of violence.
But perhaps the most significant cause of terrorism is that the majority of citizens are indifferent towards this issue. Such passive acceptance of terrorism leads to the growth of this problem, as peace loving people remain inactive and those who are proactive have no peace in them. Each one amongst us has to realize the disastrous ramification of our actions and try our best to nip violence in the bud.
Terrorists have no respect for life; they have no religion, no nationality, no ideals, no reason. But we must not give up on them. It is crucial to direct our hatred towards the sin and not the sinner. Remember, peace cannot be kept by force; it has to be achieved only by understanding.
